Today we join the World Health Organization (WHO) global campaign under the theme “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children.” World Hearing Day calls on communities, health systems, schools, families and policymakers to act now so no child is left behind due to ear or hearing problems.

In Bhutan, hearing health is not just a clinical issue, it’s an essential part of lifelong communication, learning, and inclusion. Hearing loss affects millions of children and adults worldwide and, if unaddressed, can limit development, educational opportunities, social participation and quality of life. Early detection, intervention, and prevention are powerful tools to change this.

This World Hearing Day, we celebrate:

Early detection and screening from community clinics to classrooms, so hearing needs are identified and addressed promptly.

School and community engagement empowering teachers, caregivers, and health workers with knowledge and tools on hearing care.

Hearing care for all ages advocating safe listening habits, timely referrals, and inclusive support from childhood through adulthood.

Breaking stigma and raising awareness: helping communities understand that good hearing is vital for communication, education and social connection.

At Medtronic LABS, we are proud to support initiatives that strengthen hearing care pathways and expand access from community awareness to clinical services ensuring every child and adult has the opportunity to hear, listen, and thrive.

We are honored to have been a consortium partner in the Hear, Listen and Speak (HLS) Programme and to stand alongside the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Skills Development, and fellow partners in marking the successful close of this four-year journey.

From 2021–2025, HLS strengthened Bhutan’s hearing care ecosystem through early detection, timely intervention, and expanded access to assistive hearing services, especially for children. Together, we helped scale hearing screenings, build audiology and School Health Coordinator capacity, and raise nationwide awareness on hearing health.

The launch of the HLS Programme Report and the handover of hearing aids underscore what collaborative, systems-focused partnerships can achieve. While the programme has concluded, its impact lives on laying a strong foundation for sustained, integrated hearing care within Bhutan’s health system.

We’re grateful for the trust and collaboration, and proud to support a future where every child has the opportunity to hear, listen, and speak.

We’re proud to support the Project for Strengthening Government Capacity for Using Digital Technology and Data (Four Banks Project) as Bhutan advances digital-first healthcare delivery 🇧🇹

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Royal Government of Bhutan, Government Technology (GovTech) Agency, Royal Government of Bhutan, JICA - Japan International Cooperation Agency , and the NCD Division, Bhutan Care Mobile App will be used to conduct Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) screening in two phases.

🔹 Phase I | 26 Jan – 20 Feb 2026
Focus: Bhutan Care App Proof of Concept (PoC)
📍 Four Thimphu Thromde clinic centers
Activities include:

Citizen registration on the Bhutan Care Mobile App

Basic health screening (blood pressure, BMI, obesity checks)

Estimation of 10-year cardiovascular risk (stroke & heart attack) using WHO/ISH CVD risk charts

🔹 Phase II | 25 Feb – 15 Mar 2026
Focus: Nationwide NCD screening across five districts
(More details to be announced soon)

👥 Who should participate?

Members of the general public aged 18 years and above

Individuals with NCD risk factors such as family history, overweight/obesity, or sedentary lifestyles

📱 Screening prerequisites

Ensure the Bhutan NDI App is installed and ready

Carry your CID card and, where possible, a mobile phone

This initiative marks a key step in strengthening Bhutan’s digital health ecosystem—using technology and data to enable early detection, prevention, and better NCD care at scale.
