Life Jackets Matter

🦺 Life jackets save lives.

Whenever children are boating, fishing, kayaking, or playing near open water, they should wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

❌ Water wings are not life-saving devices.
❌ Inflatable toys are not substitutes for supervision.

Swim Lessons Save Lives

🌊 It’s never too early to learn water safety skills!

Swimming lessons can help reduce the risk of drowning in children. Talk with your pediatrician about when your child may be ready for swim lessons.

Remember: Even children who know how to swim still need close supervision.

Water Safety Starts with Supervision

🏊‍♀️ Drowning can happen quickly and quietly.

The best way to keep children safe around water is active adult supervision. Stay within arm’s reach of young children whenever they are near pools, lakes, rivers, bathtubs, or beaches.

✅ Put your phone away
✅ Designate a “Water Watcher”
✅ Never leave children unattended near water

Be Prepared for Emergencies

🚨 Would you know what to do in a water emergency?

Parents, grandparents, babysitters, and caregivers should learn CPR. Immediate action can make a critical difference while waiting for emergency responders.

Ask your local community center or hospital about CPR classes.

Sleep Is a Superpower

😴 Dear Future College Students: Sleep Is Not Optional

Many freshmen underestimate the importance of sleep.

Lack of sleep can affect:
📚 Grades
🚗 Driving safety
🧠 Mental health
🏈 Athletic performance
🦠 Immune function

Aim for 8–10 hours of sleep whenever possible.

Success starts with rest.

Don’t drive all the way home when you are exhausted…in the middle of the night…on these dark Alabama roads. Wait until the morning!!!

Prioritize Mental Health

🧠 Your Mental Health Matters in College

Starting college is exciting—but it can also be stressful.

Remember:
💙 It’s okay to feel overwhelmed.
💙 Ask for help early.
💙 Get enough sleep.
💙 Stay connected to family and friends.
💙 Learn where your campus counseling center is located.

Strong students ask for support when they need it & do not wait to ask for it.

Learn Your Health History!!! Your child is an ADULT now!!

📋 Can You Answer These Questions?

Before leaving for college, every graduate should know:
• Current medications and dosages
• Allergies to medications and/or foods
• Chronic medical conditions
• Family emergency contacts (all of them: with addresses and phone numbers)
• Health insurance information (Will they still be on Medicaid at the age of 18?)

If you had to visit a clinic tomorrow, would you know the answers?

If you had to visit a clinic tomorrow, where would they go? Parents, set up primary care doctors in your child’s university town/city. If you don’t know one, ask Dr J!!

Being informed is part of becoming independent.

Don’t Forget Your Vaccines!!!

💉 College Dorms = Close Living Quarters

Living with hundreds of students can increase exposure to illnesses.

Talk to your pediatrician about:
✔️ Meningococcal vaccines
✔️ Meningitis B vaccine
✔️ Tdap booster
✔️ Annual flu vaccine
✔️ COVID-19 vaccine

Look, your child will be living a part from you and some of you can’t drive and take them to a doctor at the drop of a hat (but I know some of y’all will 😂).

Vaccines help protect you and your new college community.
