, we commemorate the hard-fought victory of the women’s suffrage movement and the adoption of the 19th amendment.
Thank you to all the hardworking, powerful, and amazing women out there - today and every day, we celebrate you.

We’ll be at The State Theatre of Modesto this Thursday to bring you “What the Constitution Means to Me,” the film adaptation of the Tony-nominated, Pulitzer Prize-finalist Broadway play of the same title —a one-woman play written by and starring Heidi Schreck. Schreck resurrects her teenage self, reflecting on her time as a 15-year-old earning college tuition by competing in Constitutional debate contests across the country.

It’s funny, vulnerable storytelling that traces the effect this country’s founding document has had on four generations of women in Schreck’s own family. We think it’s a fitting, authentic, and nuanced way to celebrate the country's semi-quincentennial because it moves past blind patriotism and examines the document as a living, breathing instrument.

In partnership with the Prospect Theater Project, we’re thrilled to present our all-day 1984 Read-A-Thon all day tomorrow at PTP.

How does this connect to our mission?
George Orwell’s 1984 warns of a world where individual autonomy is erased, families are dismantled, and women’s bodies and choices are weaponized as tools of state control. The SCCW advocates for the exact opposite—visibility, rights, and empowerment of women in our community.

This is a free event, with no RSVP required. Come and stay as long as you want. Leave and come back later. Or stay and listen all day! You have options!

Theater doors open at 7:30 am; reading starts at 8:00. 1214 K Street, Modesto. Refreshments available for purchase.
