Today was the first time I ever rode Bow in an arena. Sometimes I feel like everything is against us in our training, and it's been very frustrating. Yet, this incredibly unspectacular, low quality clip, is symbolic of that. I had taken better footage, but because I live in a desert, my phone over heated and it was corrupted.
Through trying to rehabilitate his SI dysfunction, chronic stall weaving, pacing, topline, and having no arena, round pin, or enclosed area, on ground that is likely too hard for his feet, and after trying 5 different saddles, none of which fit him, we haven't been able to go far in the time we've had.
Training him has had me out of my comfort zone. With no arena, everything I knew about training had to change. To make it more difficult, his stall pacing behavior happens under saddle too. Only, if there is no fence to stop him, he will keep moving in the direction he is seeking and nothing I can do can change his mind (nothing has worked yet).
But in the brief moments where we were together, we slowly carved in his response to my reins. An open toe to the left, and open toe to the right. A neck rein here, an open rein there. A slight weight shift, for a back up, and taking energy out of my hands for a stop.
These little things did get through to him, and our little ride proved that.
Nothing that happens in the footage is great.
We were riding on a ba****ck pad, because even ba****ck stopped working for us, because I came to learn that the fabric of my pants had been slowly chafing away at his fur.
So here we are, struggling with a stupid ba****ck pad I couldn't get attached right, and it is awkward, and we are both some what struggling, but here we have the glimmer of a partnership that has been trying its damn best to survive.
Through all of this hardship, lack of resources, and facilities.
Through his stereotypies, poor topline, and everything.
I've struggled with the thoughts of giving up, selling him, moving on. But I refuse.
And I know that eventually it will all work out. Even though it's hard right now.
Even though my skill and knowledge could go way farther had we the proper equipment and the space.
But this is where we are. And we are trying our best. And that struggle to make it work is what makes our time together special.
