"Is your hip issues caused by your military service," a Veteran says as we leave coffee and donuts this morning at Festival Foods.
It was his second time coming and the first time we met.
Reminding me I still have physical signs of my Spinal Cord Injury.
My body is ever changing.
My traps (shoulder muscles) were equally angry at my massage yesterday. That is new and a win too. My body has compensated and typically been unequal with my right side had atrophied more than my left.
Physical abnormalities is an easy way for many to start the conversation. I could be angry but I use it as a stepping soon to share my adventures and open the conversation to talk about anything.
Having a story helps me connect to Veterans.
Today alone - I asked Veteran if he needed any extra support with anything. He was thoughtful and was really trying to think of something, but nothing came to mind. Later in the conversation he and his support system is advocating to get him in the Chippewa Valley Veterans Home. His ultimate goal.
Or another Veteran, "i was just an E4."
Or the Veteran that is at a point that needs Adult Protective Services called to help support him. If I do report, he may be moved, taken out of his home and I may lose contact because I am not related nor have rights to be given that information.
Holes in the system, that are sometimes put in place to protect, cause a delay to help get Veterans the help they need immediately.
I am here for it all.
To walk along side, share my story (both good and ugly) and be the cheerleader, supporter and advocate.
I am always looking for volunteers and advocates that want to do the same.
Let me know your struggle or story in the comments.
DM me if you are up for volunteering or advocating.
