โ€œMy horse has a rib out!โ€

What does it mean when your horse โ€œhas a rib outโ€?

It usually doesnโ€™t mean a rib is literally displaced. More often, weโ€™re feeling restricted motion and rotation through the thoracic spine and rib cage.

This is frequently a secondary compensation for an issue in the hindquarters or forehand. Because the thoracic spine acts like a fulcrum through the middle of the barrel, dysfunction elsewhere can create a twisting pattern through the horseโ€™s midsection.

Remember: the ribs attach to the thoracic spine, and the shaft of the final rib extends back to approximately the L2 level. The rib cage influences much more of the horseโ€™s body than many people realize but it is often secondary to a larger picture!
