CRS Parent Connection

CRS Parent Connection Our continuum-of-care approach means that support and resources are available to Alabamians with disabilities at every stage of life.

This page will be a source of information for all Family Involvement Activities sponsored by the Children's Rehabilitation Service Parent Connection Program in Alabama. Children's Rehabilitation Service (CRS) is a statewide system of services for children with special health care needs and their families, and adults with hemophilia. Every county in Alabama is served through a network of 14 community-based offices staffed with skilled professionals who provide quality medical, rehabilitative, and educational support services. CRS is a division of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS), the state's lead agency serving Alabamians with disabilities, and helping to enable them to reach their maximum potential.

Alabama’s Early Intervention System (AEIS) provides supports and services for infants and toddlers under the age of three who have a developmental delay or a medical diagnosis that can delay normal development, which can prevent the child from meeting developmental milestones. Early Intervention supports and services focus on teaching the parents and caregivers ways to help the child learn and participate in everyday activities. Services are provided in the child’s natural environment, such as home, daycare, or community setting.

Eligibility is determined after the family is assigned a service coordinator and an evaluation is completed on the child, at home, day care, or another appropriate setting. Anyone who has concerns about a child’s development can make a referral for early intervention. A doctor’s referral is not required. It is best practice to discuss your concern with the parent of someone else’s child if you are making a referral, to ensure the parent is aware. There are multiple ways to make a referral.

Call Child Find at 1-800-543-3098, contact an ADRS office near you, visit NeverTooEarlyAL.org to request a referral online, or download the Child Find Referral Form.

September is National Service Dog Month, a time to CELEBRATE the incredible impact service dogs have on people with disabilities!

These amazing canines are individually trained to empower individuals, providing them with independence, confidence, and joy, enabling them to live their lives to the fullest!

Service dogs are trained to assist with everyday tasks, increasing independence for their partners who have a disability, and performing incredible feats like pulling wheelchairs, picking up dropped items, alerting to sounds and blood sugar levels, and mitigating symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

My name is Delaney Zimlich. I’m 20 years old and was born with Spina Bifida. I have been a patient of Children’s Rehabilitation Services since I was little. I have recently started the process of transitioning from pediatric providers to adult providers. For many, that is a scary experience, including for myself. It is scary not knowing what to do next after having services such as wheelchairs and other therapies provided by CRS providers.

Outside of the medical side of having a disability, I have a passion for adaptive recreation. My family has made sure I can take part in activities they enjoy. I have had the opportunity to try many adaptive sports, including water skiing on a sit-ski, adaptive biking, wheelchair racing, and, most recently, wheelchair tennis. I have had the opportunity to speak with local lawmakers about ways to offer adaptive opportunities so that all people can use our wonderful parks and recreational services.

If I could give any advice to anyone younger with disabilities, I would say find ways to stay active. I am fortunate that my family has found ways that I can take part in activities that they enjoy. We started our nonprofit Krewe of Kindness to help provide adaptive recreation opportunities and access to resources that are available for any abilities to stay active and enjoy life.

Delaney created the Krewe of Kindness to help other families.
