The military is heavily armed and still trains combatives. Law enforcement officers carry fi****ms and other defensive or less lethal tools and still train defensive tactics. There is a reason for that. A weapon is not always available, appropriate, accessible, or the best option. When a situation becomes physical at close range, there may be no time or space to reach for another tool. Fire, EMS, and healthcare personnel face that same reality, often while trying to help the person who may suddenly become the threat.

46,000+ people saw why this matters.

Now we need to do something about it.

We are raising funds to send four NFS instructors through the Gracie Medical Defense Instructor Course so we can bring this training home and put it in the hands of the people who may need it most.

This photo is being shared with Bobby Poynton’s explicit permission and blessing.

Bobby went to work that day to help people. He ended up being the one who needed help.

On that call, Bobby was stabbed. His lieutenant was stabbed. A medic was stabbed.

But the impact did not stop with the people who were physically injured.

It rippled through the firefighters and medics who were there, the people who responded in the aftermath, the coworkers who watched their own become patients, the families who received the phone calls, and the departments that had to process what happened and then keep showing up for the next call.

This was one incident, and an extreme example.

But it reflects a reality firefighters, medics, healthcare workers, and other helping professionals live with every day: any call can change quickly.

Most calls do not end like this.

Some do.

And the potential for violence can emerge with very little warning.

That is why preparation matters.

Never Forgotten Services, PLLC is working with Gracie Medical Defense to build a local training capability here in East Central Illinois.

In September, four local instructors will attend Gracie Medical Defense’s 40-hour instructor training in Springfield. Once trained, they will be able to bring this training home and help better prepare firefighters, EMS personnel, healthcare workers, and other helping professionals for situations where the person they came to help becomes the threat.

The total cost of this effort is $13,900:

• $12,800 for four instructor training slots
• Approximately $1,100 for lodging

We already have $8,000 committed.

That leaves $5,900 still needed.

We are not asking the community to build this from scratch. Local support has already put more than half of the funding in place.

We are asking you to help us finish it.

$1. $5. $10. $25. $100. $1,000. $10,000.

Whatever you can give helps.

Please note: contributions to this campaign are not being represented as tax-deductible charitable donations. Never Forgotten Services, PLLC is not a 501(c)(3) organization, and funds raised will be used specifically for the Gracie Medical Defense instructor training and associated lodging costs described above.

This is bigger than sending four people to a class.

We are building the ability to train and better prepare the people who show up for us when things go wrong.

If you can contribute:

If you know a business owner, organization, department, or individual who might believe in this mission, put this in front of them.

$5,900 left. Help us bring this training home.

Behind the Uniform: Mental Health, Stress, and the Cost of Staying Silent

Some people wear uniforms. Some carry radios. Some sit in patrol cars, classrooms, clinics, tractors, offices, churches, or homes.

Different roles. Same hidden load.

I’ll be speaking at KayBee Community Cafe on Wednesday, May 20 at 6:00 PM for a community conversation about stress, silence, overload, and what happens when people keep showing up while quietly running on empty.

We’ll talk about why people stay silent, what high stress can look like in the body, mind, emotions, behavior, and relationships, and how families, coworkers, leaders, and communities can recognize the warning signs earlier.

This is not about calling people broken.

It is about understanding load.

It is about knowing what to say, what to watch for, and how to support people before things become a crisis.

If this hits close to home for you, your family, your team, or someone you care about, come join us.

Have you heard about Piatt County Mental Health Network? I’d encourage you to go give it a like and follow. Big plans coming to Piatt Co!

Welcome to the Piatt County Mental Health Network 💚

This page is a collaboration between several local organizations across Piatt County who have come together with a shared goal:

To raise awareness around mental health, reduce stigma, and make it easier for our community to access support and resources.

Throughout May, we’ll be highlighting Mental Health Awareness Month through local events, partnerships, and opportunities to get involved. Beyond that, this space will continue to serve as a place to:

• Share local mental health resources
• Highlight organizations and businesses committed to this work
• Promote community events and initiatives
• Encourage open, supportive conversations

There are so many people and organizations in Piatt County doing meaningful work in this space, and we want to help bring visibility to those efforts.

At the heart of everything we do is this message:

You Belong. You Matter.

We’re so glad you’re here.

👉 If you’re a local organization, business, or resource provider and would like to be featured or involved, we’d love to connect.

👉 If you’re a community member, feel free to follow along, share, and engage. This is for you too.

Let’s build something meaningful together 💚

Excited for what’s to come for Piatt County!

Excited for what’s to come for Piatt County!

Great things can happen when collaboration is a core principle. Today several local organizations came together to talk about how we can jointly raise the awareness of mental health and reduce stigma related to treatment. Be on the lookout for the fruits of these discussions during May's Mental Health Awareness Month. Thank you to KayBee Community Cafe, The Jamie Boone Project, Hope Lives Youth Ranch, Piatt County Sheriff's Office, Yoga Off the Square, Never Forgotten Services, PLLC, and 708 Mental Health Board of Piatt County for coming to the table and for your contributions to our community.
