One of the most common things I hear from clients is that they feel disconnected from their body. This disconnection is something we've all likely experienced at one time. When you are experiencing physical pain for example, it is common to purposely ignore, avoid, and ultimately disconnect from that area.

But what about emotional pain?

We often carry emotional pain and this pain commonly results as held tension patterns that the nervous system activates whenever it is triggered by a similar feeling or fear of a similar feeling occurring. Think of "The Body Keeps the Score" a best seller from Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk. These patterns are "stored" as nervous system responses whether it is from physical pain and compensation patterns or emotional distress.

This is why somatic dialogue is an important part of somatic bodywork. It gently guides you back to reconnecting with your body and deeply listening to what is there. Just your awareness and acknowledgment is often enough to process and release the tension.

Somatic Reset Bodywork trusts the body's wisdom and gently guides you back into deeper relationship with yourself through somatic dialogue.

I’ll be representing Y12SR at the Carteret County Celebrate Recovery event. 🫶🏼

Yogic philosophy paves the wave of understanding inner and outer relations. The practice of Y12SR weaves these understandings with movement, because we recognize the importance of including the body in the therapeutic process.

Y12SR is for everyone.
For those in substance recovery.
For those in crisis recovery.
For those who love or cares for someone living in recovery from substance or crisis.

I’m just one little person yelling into the abyss sometimes, but knowing that I can reach even 1 person and make a difference, makes it worth it.

Just a reminder I’m closed for a quick trip out of state to get some of my late grandmas belongings. It’s been a lot of sorting through photos, checking in with family and every time you think you’re done…. There’s a whole other collection to go through 😮‍💨 but I’m enjoying catching up with my cousins and my family 💗
I’ll be returning for work Tuesday.

I stumbled across something the other day... It was a thread of comments from bodyworkers that truly showed they were stuck in a belief of outdated information.

And that scares me.

We live in a world where current research is available at our fingertips. Staying stuck in old beliefs is a choice. But when you're working directly with the public, shouldn't that choice always be to keep learning?

Somewhere in that thread I saw practitioners arguing that emotions aren't stored in the body. I guess they believe the nervous system, brain, and body are somehow disconnected from one another. I genuinely cannot fathom that mindset, especially in this field. And I can't imagine that landing well with any client managing anxiety, depression, or trauma.

Clients who trust us with their bodies deserve practitioners who understand how those bodies actually work.

So I feel like this needs to be said.

The massage and bodywork field is outdated.

We have textbook authors publicly proud of refusing to update their material with current findings.

We have therapists still citing the Touch Research Institute as the leading authority on massage research, when it hasn't held that position for years.

Many are taught to lead with a fix it mentality, that deeper pressure is always better, or that stretching tight muscles is a valid approach 🤦🏻‍♀️, even though neuromuscular education tells a very different story.

And underneath all of it, antiquated myths keep getting repeated by well meaning therapists who simply were never taught otherwise.

Our boards aren't stepping in either. Misinformation, missing information, outdated information, none of it seems to be their concern, even though they are supposed to be protecting the public. Honestly, that's part of what makes this so disheartening. They aren’t here for us as licensed professionals and there’s zero regulation of education across the nation. No monitoring. No ensuring educational standards. And I’ve witnessed first hand how that runs programs into the ground.

It's also exactly why I became an educator.

Because we as therapists deserve better training, and our clients deserve better care. Updating what we know isn't optional in a field built on trust and touch.
It should be mandatory.

5 grams… about the weight of a nickel, is all that’s needed to release fascia. 🤯

And I see that happen in CranialSacral Therapy sessions all the time.

The body naturally reorganizes itself. We know this. What so many don’t know, is that it happens even with only 5 grams of pressure.

That’s right.

You don’t need deep pressure to create change.

In fact, deep pressure often triggers protective responses in the body creating more tension, more guarding and ultimately more pain, especially if what you have going on is in the fascia. Deep work should be reserved for deeper musculoskeletal pain that involves specific muscles. Often, this cannot be properly addressed without first releasing the fascia barrier. Most therapists tend to power through it with a fix it mindset that believes deeper is better. But understanding neuroscience, the nervous system and the neuromuscular connection teaches a completely different picture.

Your fascia is heavily innervated. It’s part of the sensory input system connected to the somatic nervous system. That’s a whole branch of the nervous system widely ignored, yet it’s the most powerful in processing and eliciting change. Without it, the autonomic nervous system responsible for flight/fight or rest/digest wouldn’t be able to respond.

This is the type of education I teach to other massage therapists in my Somatic Reset Therapy™ courses. It’s also the basis for the way I work no matter what session you come in for.

The body is amazing. Working with the body instead of against it yields greater results. Recognizing the whole system, instead of pieces and parts, makes you a rebel in this field and we all know I am a rebel soul through and through. 🫶🏼

If there's one thing I have learned in midlife, it's that you really begin to notice just how much you've carried throughout life, from trauma, to societal labels, to expectations from others and yourself.

One layer after another just piles on, until one day you wake up and feel like you don't even know yourself anymore.

You're just surviving.

Disconnected from yourself, maybe even disconnected from life around you, because presence always seems to escape you.

This is not the life you want to be living. You feel it in your bones.

It's screaming at you internally for a change. But where do you even begin?

I work with so many women who feel exactly this way. Midlife does not have to be a crisis, it can be the catalyst for the change you've been craving from within.

I've put together something special for the woman who sees herself in this post.

Somatic Reset Immersion: Rediscover You is a guided pathway back to yourself, blending nervous system regulation, somatic practices, and inner child healing into an empowered healing journey home to you.

This LIVE online cohort begins 8/15!

You've spent so long tending to everyone else.

Their needs.
Their schedules.
Their emotions.
Their comfort.

Somewhere in the middle of all that tending, you got lost.

Not gone, just quiet. Waiting for permission that was never going to come from anyone but you.

This is your reminder:

You don't need to earn rest.
You don't need to finish the list first.
You don't need everyone else's needs met before you tend to your own.

Centering yourself isn't selfish. It's not abandonment of everyone else.

It's the thing that lets you show up as you, instead of the version of you that's been running on empty.

Come back to your body.
Come back to what you actually want.
Come back to yourself.

If you're ready to learn how to put yourself first without falling back into self-abandonment, that's exactly the work I do. Learn more at SomaPsycheSoul.com
