If you google “self care” you’ll probably see stuff along the lines of treating yourself, taking a bubble bath, lighting a candle, or journaling. It’s not to say these things aren’t self care. They are. I just think we can get a little more intentional about it.

In my digital workbook, The Creative Art of Self Care, I break self care down into 6 separate domains to guide you in nourishing all areas of your life in ways that are personalized to you.

It’s easy to spend a lot of time focusing on goals and big moments like major accomplishments and life milestones. These things do matter, and they’re worth remembering and celebrating. But at the same time, they don’t make up the majority of our lives.

The smaller moments do. How we choose to spend the weekend or the evening after work. Who we choose to spend time with. How we fill all the spaces between the big moments.

In ACT, we talk a lot about values. Values give our lives direction. They’re like a compass. They influence the decisions we make every day.

Your values lie in the answers to the questions “what kind of life do I want to live?” And “what kind of person do I want to be?”

What matters to you lately?

Candle of Intention was an evening of mindfulness, creativity, reflection, and reconnecting with what matters most.

So yes the candles came out beautiful, but they’re also symbolic of the intentions and values each person wants to carry with them. This way, lighting the candle becomes a reminder to slow down, and reconnect with those things.

Thank you to everyone who spent the evening with us!

Thank you to MujerJustDoItOfficial for sponsoring the event and always supporting what we create 💗

& thank you to Jaime Marie for joining us with her delicious cake pops & chocolate covered strawberries. if you’re looking for treats for your next event please do support her local small business 🍓

So much of our energy goes into trying to get rid of uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.

“I shouldn’t be this anxious”
“why can’t this feeling just go away?”

Unfortunately, being human means will experience the full range of emotions, and that includes them uncomfortable ones like fear, sadness, anger, and disappointment.

The goal isn’t to avoid those experiences. We can’t control that. What we can control is learning a different way of responding to them.

Though we can’t choose every thought or emotion that shows up, we can choose what we do next.

What’s one small way you can respond to yourself with compassion today instead of criticism?

I know it’s common to associate mindfulness with meditation. All meditation IS mindfulness but not all mindfulness is meditation.

I love using creativity as a way of practicing mindfulness because it gives us a chance to pause, engage with our senses, and reconnect with ourselves.

This is the intention behind our upcoming candle making workshop. It’s meant to be a space to slow down, create, and make something meaningful…very intentionally.

We still have spots available and we would love for you to join us for an evening of creativity and mindfulness 💗

We have really grown to enjoy creating these spaces for women to slow down, express themselves creatively, reflect, and connect with themselves and the others in the room.

Our next workshop, Candle of Intention, is focused on mindfulness, settting intention, and reconnecting with what matters most, especially moving into the last half of the year. It’ll be on August 6 @ 6:30pm!

Mindfulness is just paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, without judging it. But in today’s world with all of our constant distractions and busy minds we rarely practice that.

Sometimes it helps to have a dedicated space to slow down and really allow yourself to be present in the moment.

That’s what the Candle of Intention workshop is for 🕯️

It’s a space to step away from the craziness of everyday life, create something meaningful, and practice slowing down in community with other women.

You can also mindfully enjoy a sweet treat by Jaime Marie while you’re there 😋🍰

Join us for an evening to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and create something meaningful alongside other women 🕯️

Yes we’re making candles, but as a therapist led workshop, we’re also creating a space to pause, practice mindfulness, reflect on what matters most, and set intentions that you’ll carry with you. Our goal is for this to be a cozy, creative evening to help you reconnect with yourself 🤎

Jaime Marie will also be joining us with delicious desserts available for purchase 🍓

Self compassion isn’t giving up on growth.

It’s creating the conditions that help it happen.

When we think about something like a plant, this makes a lot of sense. Plants don’t grow from pressure or criticism or getting neglected. They grow when they’re watered, given light, and cared for consistently.

Think about yourself in the same way. When we’re constantly depleted or harsh with ourselves, it gets harder to grow in the ways we want to because over time the criticism just creates frustration and burnout. And when we don’t meet our own needs it eventually gets harder to meet the needs of others.

So the inner critic isn’t the only way to get yourself to grow. It might work temporarily but there are consequences that actually work against you. Self compassion acknowledges areas for improvement while also recognizing what we need and what would actually be helpful to us 🤎
