🎒 Back to School is almost here!

Whether your child attends public school, private school, or is homeschooled, Back to School can look different for every family.

Tonight at Growing Hope Together Parent Support Group, we’re talking about getting back into routines, advocating for your child and family, IEPs and 504 plans, working with teachers and school staff, and having those important conversations before Open House and the first day of school when possible.

What can we do ahead of time? Who do we need to talk to? How can parents and schools meet in the middle while still making sure our children and families are heard?

🏠 Homeschool families, this conversation is for you too! We’ll talk about routines, support, resources, and preparing for another year of learning at home.
We’ll also share state and local resources for parents and families.

Come share what has worked for your family, ask questions, or just listen. 💚

"But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret." Matthew 6:3–4

I've been saying this for a while, so when I saw Serenity share recently about why they don't post the people they serve, it really stuck with me.

Serenity is an amazing organization, and it was refreshing to see another nonprofit put into words something I've felt strongly about for a long time.

I've had people show me grace throughout my life in some of my hardest seasons. They didn't take pictures. They didn't make a big deal about what they did. They didn't make me feel like I owed them my story or had to show everyone what I was going through.

They just showed up.

And I think that's a big reason why I feel the way I do about The Yellow Elephant.

A lot of what we do, you will probably never see on Facebook.

We walk alongside families. We connect people with resources. We work with other nonprofits and community partners when there is a need.

Sometimes we're just one small piece of getting that need met.

And we don't post it all.

Maybe that's why sometimes people don't realize everything The Yellow Elephant does. And that's okay.

Because there are real people behind these needs. People who may be going through one of the most vulnerable times of their lives. Receiving support shouldn't mean they have to give up their privacy or have that vulnerable moment shared publicly.

And the safety piece is very real too.

There are situations where sharing someone's picture, where they're staying, where they've moved, or even certain details about what's happening in their life can put them at risk.

We don't always know the whole story behind someone's circumstances, and we don't need to.

Their safety and dignity matter more than proving we did something.

I understand that donors want to know their support is being used and making a difference. They absolutely should know.

We can be transparent about that without making someone's personal situation public.

I just keep coming back to this...

I want to do things behind closed doors that help open doors for other people.

I've been shown that kind of grace in my own life. No show. No recognition needed. Just people loving people and meeting needs because they could.

That's the kind of community I believe in.

And that's the kind of Yellow Elephant I want us to always be.

Every story matters. Even the ones we never tell. 💛🐘

I always notice that when I come across someone I haven’t seen in a while, and I bring up the person I lost, they look at me in horror.

Their face changes and they suddenly look like they’re trying to figure out what they should say, or that they can’t believe I’m still talking about it.

Sometimes it feels like there’s an elephant in the room.

And that elephant is my grief.

If I say their name in a crowded room it goes quiet.
If I start to tell my story nobody really wants to listen.

My grief is the elephant in the room because everybody is always trying so hard to get around it and pretending it’s not there.

Here’s the thing…for me that’s never been an option.

What some people don’t understand is that I can’t just live the rest of my life pretending what happened never happened.

It’s crazy to think that I would stop speaking about someone I love so much, because that would be like pretending they didn’t exist.

Instead of avoiding the elephant in the room, I wish people would just ask me questions, share a memory, or even just be kind.

I did some research and found out that elephants are actually big-hearted, compassionate and very protective of those they love.

They also have some very unique ways of dealing with their own grief.

So maybe the elephant in the room isn’t just my grief, maybe it’s also me.

And the only people that can really see me…are those that also have an elephant in the room.
