Women who miscarry or have a stillbirth absolutely have a postpartum time too. That might not look the same as what the "typical" postpartum time is like, but they absolutely deserve just as much love and care as any other mom.

What handouts would you like to see added?

The Trump Administration has proposed a plan that could give around $9,000 per child, per year to stay-at-home parents in a married family, where one spouse works at least 35 hours a week.

It would be through the Child Care fund — creating a new category called "parent-based care" so a mom or dad who stays home to raise their own children can qualify for the same kind of support that currently only goes to daycare centers.

I’m very curious people’s thoughts on this. As someone who’s a stay at home mom and a caregiver to a special needs child most of the time, this would be incredibly helpful to my family. But at the same time I feel like more government involvement in anything is never good. Thoughts? Do you support this proposal? Why or why not?

I sell these in colored paper btw, if you’re an old school midwife or student like me.

Two rarities on this beautiful placenta ❤️

One of my favorite parts of examining a placenta after birth is seeing the unique story it tells—and this one had two fascinating findings: a yolk sac remnant and a furcate cord insertion.

🤍 Yolk Sac Remnant
Sometimes when examining a placenta after birth, you may find a tiny little piece of your baby’s earliest beginnings—the yolk sac remnant.

The yolk sac plays an important role during the first weeks of pregnancy, helping support the developing embryo before the placenta fully takes over. It contributes to early nutrient transfer and is one of the first places where blood cells are formed.

As pregnancy progresses, the yolk sac normally shrinks and disappears. Occasionally, though, a small remnant persists within the membranes and can still be found when examining the placenta after birth. It can look like a tiny little seed tucked within the membranes.

🤍 Furcate Cord Insertion

The second interesting finding was a mild furcate insertion. This can be identified by the distinct “forking” appearance of the vessels where the umbilical cord meets the placenta.

Normally, the umbilical vessels remain bundled together and protected by Wharton’s jelly until they reach the placenta. With a furcate insertion, the vessels separate from one another before reaching the placental surface. Once they separate, they lose the protection of Wharton’s jelly, leaving portions of the vessels exposed and potentially more vulnerable to injury.

Furcate insertions are considered rare and are sometimes not even identified on ultrasound, meaning the first time they are noticed may be during the examination of the placenta after birth.

Two unusual findings on one beautiful placenta—one offering a tiny glimpse into the very beginning of this baby’s development, and the other showing just how uniquely the placenta and umbilical cord can form. ❤️

The placenta really is an incredible record of the journey from those earliest weeks of pregnancy all the way to birth.
