Parents often wonder when spoken words will start to emerge. In a recent refresher training on the SCERTS Model (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, and Transactional Support), the importance of strong social connection with a responsive communication partner was emphasized as a key foundation. While technology is often blamed, it may be more helpful to look at the decrease in opportunities for back-and-forth, “serve and return” interactions that support early communication development.

Long post but definitely worth a read to get a glimpse of how AAC can look for gestalt language processors that have special interests in particular shows. Always presume competence and know that children are constantly communicating even when we don’t quite understand the message yet.
