Why Does This Bother Me So Much? Have you ever had a reaction that seemed way bigger than it should have been?
Maybe a certain sound makes you instantly tense. Someone’s tone puts you on edge. Or something relatively small happens and you start losing it before you even understand why.
There may be more to that reaction than you realize.
Your brain’s alarm system uses past experience to help determine what might be important or threatening now. Sometimes something happening today can resemble an earlier experience closely enough that the brain's alarm sounds, even when you consciously know you’re safe.
That’s why, in the Dr. Funk Method, I often say:
Triggers are messages, not flaws.
Rather than judging the reaction, we can become curious about it.
What might my brain's alarm system be responding to?
What does this situation and my reaction remind me of?
You don’t have to force an answer. Awareness can unfold gradually.
The body speaks first. The story comes second.
And sometimes understanding the message behind the reaction helps us understand ourselves a little more clearly.
