The best and most humbling part of my week 😂♟️

I get to teach /s/ and /th/… and in return, my client gets to teach me how to play chess.

Turns out, going from teacher to student is a pretty great reminder of what it feels like to be learning something brand new. Suddenly, I’m the one needing directions repeated, making the same mistake more than once, and celebrating the very small victories (like finally remembering which direction each piece can move!)

It’s also a good reminder of just how much the way we give feedback matters. Learning is hard! Confidence matters. Encouragement matters. Progress deserves to be celebrated even when it feels tiny.

So while he’s working on his speech sounds, I’ll be over here working on keeping my chess pieces moving in the right direction. ♟️🪿

We’re both learning something new and I think that’s pretty cool!

Things we’ve been LOVING in the therapy room lately 🐾🦕🌈
✨ Putting everything in rainbow order
🐾 Paw Patrol
🔺 Magnatiles
🦖 Dinosaurs
💭 Pretend play

Some of the best therapy materials are the toys kids already want to play with! A few favorites can create SO many opportunities for speech and language practice while keeping therapy fun and child-led.

Today, Paw Patrol + Magnatiles + dinosaurs were perfect for targeting /s/ and /z/ during play. Think: Chase, Skye, Zuma, Everest, Rex, dinosaur, triceratops, tiles, and vehicles—just to name a few! We practiced our sounds while building towers, driving trucks, rescuing dinosaurs, and creating our own little world. 🏗️

The same toys can also target following directions, expanding sentences, describing, spatial concepts, requesting, WH questions, sequencing, turn taking, and pretend play.

Therapy doesn’t always look like sitting at a table with flashcards. Sometimes it looks like a giant pup color-coded Magnatile tower and dinosaurs. 💛

Communication doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens during play, mealtimes, classroom activities, and everyday routines. That’s why Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy often work hand in hand.

While Speech Therapy helps children build communication, language, feeding, and social skills, Occupational Therapy supports sensory processing, regulation, fine motor skills, and independence. Did you know a trip to the ballpark can be a great opportunity to build speech and language skills? ⚾️🗣️

Whether you’re cheering on your favorite team, grabbing a snack, or waiting between innings, there are countless opportunities to support communication development in a fun, natural way.

Try:
⚾️ Describing the action on the field
⚾️ Making predictions about what will happen next
⚾️ Learning new baseball vocabulary
⚾️ Listening for and identifying different sounds
⚾️ Practicing conversational turn-taking and asking questions

These simple interactions help strengthen vocabulary, language comprehension, critical thinking, social communication, and conversational skills—all while making memories together.

One of my favorite affordable ways to catch a game is attending a Schaumburg Boomers game. The family-friendly atmosphere makes it a perfect outing, and there are so many opportunities to encourage communication while having fun.

You don’t need anything fancy — just head outside and explore together!

Talk about:

🪨 big/small, smooth/rough, under/on top

Try saying:
💬 “I found something tiny!”
💬 “Let’s look under here!”
💬 “Wow, you spotted it!”
