Just because your child has been diagnosed does not mean they will receive an IEP.

When a child is diagnosed with ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, Anxiety etc. Many parents think that their child will automatically receive an IEP. This is not always the case.

A diagnosis identifies a condition. However, as guided by Indiana Department of Education Article 7 special education law, an IEP requires the school to determine if the condition adversely impacts the student's educational performance and that they require special instruction as a result.

Once your child is evaluated, the school will decide if they qualify for an IEP. Test scores, grades, work samples and intervention data will all play a role. Having a diagnosis can help but it does not guarantee your child will receive services.

Thinking about getting evaluated as an adult?

Good Grades Do Not Always Tell the Whole Story

A child can earn good grades and still struggle significantly.

Some students compensate by working much longer than their classmates, relying heavily on parents, avoiding difficult assignments, or becoming anxious about making mistakes. Others hold themselves together throughout the school day and become exhausted or emotionally overwhelmed at home.

Grades are important, but they do not measure the amount of effort, stress, or support required to achieve them. When concerns arise, it helps to look beyond the report card and consider the child’s attention, organization, emotional well-being, independence, and overall experience with learning.

Success should not have to come at an unreasonable personal cost.

Strengths Matter, Too

Evaluations naturally focus on concerns, but strengths are not an afterthought.
A child may struggle with reading while demonstrating strong reasoning and creativity. An adult may have difficulty with organization but excel at solving complex problems. Someone experiencing social difficulties may also show honesty, loyalty, deep knowledge, or exceptional attention to subjects that matter to them.

Recognizing strengths helps us develop recommendations that fit the whole person. It also provides a more accurate message:

Some things may be genuinely difficult for you, but those difficulties do not define your intelligence, your character, or your potential.

This version makes the full scope of your practice much clearer without making the page feel promotional. It also introduces adult services through educational content that adults—or their spouses and family members—may recognize and share.

What Happens During an Adult Psychological Evaluation?

An adult psychological evaluation usually begins with a detailed interview about the person’s concerns, history, relationships, education, work, health, and daily functioning.
Testing is then selected according to the questions being asked. It may examine attention, memory, executive functioning, emotional functioning, personality, social communication, or cognitive abilities. With permission, information from family members or past records may also be helpful.

There is no single test that answers every question. The evaluator integrates information from multiple sources, considers alternative explanations, and explains the findings in plain language. The final goal is clarity—not simply receiving a diagnosis.

When Worry Becomes a Concern

Everyone experiences worry. It becomes more concerning when it is frequent, difficult to control, or begins interfering with sleep, work, school, relationships, independence, or daily activities.

Anxiety does not always look like fear. In children, it may appear as irritability, stomachaches, avoidance, perfectionism, or emotional outbursts. Adults may experience procrastination, constant reassurance seeking, difficulty making decisions, physical tension, or exhaustion from repeatedly anticipating what might go wrong.
Understanding what is underneath the behavior can change how we respond. Sometimes what appears to be defiance, poor motivation, or indecisiveness is actually being driven by anxiety.

Dyslexia Is Not Reading Backward

Dyslexia is often misunderstood as seeing or writing letters backward. In reality, it primarily affects the development of accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.

A person with dyslexia may struggle to connect letters with sounds, decode unfamiliar words, read smoothly, or spell consistently. These difficulties are not caused by low intelligence, laziness, or inadequate effort.

Dyslexia continues into adulthood, although its appearance may change with experience and intervention. With appropriate instruction, support, and strategies, people with dyslexia can make meaningful progress and succeed academically and professionally.
