Westmoreland Pharmacy was grateful for the opportunity to volunteer with Dare to Care Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry last week!

Together with Dare to Care, our team helped serve approximately 100 families who needed extra support with groceries this month. Westmoreland Pharmacy also donated $6,500 to Dare to Care this year to help purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for neighbors in need.

Every role played a part in helping fight hunger and support neighbors across Kentuckiana, where 1 in 5 children and 1 in 7 adults face food insecurity.

Dare to Care serves more than 21 million meals to neighbors each year, working toward its mission of creating pathways to end hunger. We’re proud to support their important work and thankful for the chance to serve our community.

What Is Low-Dose Naltrexone?

Low-dose naltrexone, commonly known as LDN, uses a significantly lower dose of naltrexone than standard therapy, typically around 1–5 mg rather than 50–100 mg.

At these lower strengths, LDN is being studied for its potential role in supporting endorphin activity, pain signaling, and immune regulation. Although these uses are considered off label, some healthcare providers incorporate LDN into individualized treatment plans for select patients with chronic pain, autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, and other complex medical concerns, including Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

LDN is generally considered well tolerated, although some patients may experience temporary side effects such as vivid dreams or headaches.

Because these lower strengths are not typically available as commercially manufactured products, LDN is often prepared by a compounding pharmacy based on a valid prescription.

Talk with your healthcare provider and the Westmoreland Pharmacy team to learn whether LDN may be appropriate for your individual needs.

New research is contributing to the ongoing conversation about vaginal estrogen and long-term women’s health.

A recently published study found an association between vaginal estrogen use and lower rates of serious health outcomes, including all-cause mortality, among women with recurrent urinary tract infections.

While more research is needed, these findings may help address common misconceptions about localized estrogen therapy and encourage more informed conversations about menopause, urinary health, and individualized treatment options.

Healthcare providers can help women understand the potential benefits and considerations of localized hormone therapy based on their symptoms, medical history, and overall health needs.

Westmoreland Pharmacy works with prescribers to prepare customized hormone formulations when commercially available options do not fully meet a patient’s needs.

What Does It Mean to Be an NABP-Accredited Compounding Pharmacy?

NABP Compounding Pharmacy Accreditation is an independent recognition of a pharmacy’s commitment to quality compounding practices, medication safety, and continuous compliance.

To earn this accreditation, a pharmacy must undergo a detailed evaluation of areas such as:
• Pharmacy licensing and regulatory compliance
• Quality assurance procedures
• Staff training and responsibilities
• Ingredient sourcing and documentation
• Compounding processes and facility standards
• Testing, recordkeeping, and medication traceability
• Alignment with applicable USP standards for nonsterile, sterile, and hazardous drug compounding

Accreditation is not a one-time designation. NABP issues it for a three-year term and requires ongoing compliance reviews during the accreditation period.

For patients and healthcare providers, choosing an NABP-accredited compounding pharmacy means working with a pharmacy that has voluntarily undergone additional independent review and demonstrated its commitment to established quality and safety standards.

Westmoreland Pharmacy is proud to have obtained NABP Compounding Pharmacy Accreditation as part of our continued commitment to customized patient care.

Is Your Skin Ready for Fall?

After months of sunshine, pool days, vacations, and time outdoors, your skin may be telling the story of summer. Even with sunscreen and good skincare habits, heat, UV exposure, sweat, chlorine, saltwater, and insect bites can take their toll.

As the seasons begin to change, many people notice dry or rough skin, uneven tone, dark spots, breakouts, redness, peeling, or fine lines becoming more noticeable. Fall is an excellent time to talk with your healthcare provider about addressing these concerns and refreshing your skincare routine.

When a commercially available product isn't the right fit, customized compounded dermatology medications may help support your provider's treatment plan. Depending on your prescription, compounded preparations can be tailored by strength, ingredient combination, and dosage form, including creams, lotions, gels, ointments, and serums, to meet your individual needs.

Whether you're looking to address acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, scarring, or visible signs of aging, talk with one of our pharmacists or your healthcare provider to learn whether a customized dermatology medication like our line of Rx Face Creams and Body Serums or new Moisturizing Cream may be appropriate for you.

Hair loss is rarely caused by just one factor. Thinning and shedding can involve multiple biological pathways, which may require a more individualized, combination-based treatment approach.

As patient needs and preferences evolve, providers are considering factors such as topical solutions versus low-dose oral options, tolerability, ease of use, and long-term adherence.

Customized medications offer flexibility in dosage forms, strengths, and ingredient combinations, helping providers develop treatment plans tailored more closely to each individual.

Westmoreland Pharmacy works collaboratively with healthcare providers to prepare customized formulations based on a valid prescription.

Lab Fact Friday: 🧪 Ingredient Quality Starts with Verification

Every compounded medication starts with the quality of its ingredients.

We source pharmaceutical-grade ingredients from trusted, FDA-registered suppliers. Each ingredient arrives with a Certificate of Analysis (COA), which provides important information about its identity, purity, potency, and quality before it ever reaches the compounding bench.

Before compounding begins, our team carefully reviews this documentation and records each ingredient's lot number, creating complete traceability throughout the compounding process.

It's one of the many behind-the-scenes quality practices that helps us maintain consistency, accountability, and confidence in every prescription we prepare.

MYTH: Compounded medications are only a last resort.
FACT: Compounding may be considered whenever a commercially available medication does not fully match an individual’s prescribed needs.

A provider may recommend a customized formulation because a person needs a different strength, dosage form, ingredient combination, flavor, or method of administration. Compounding can also help support treatment plans when swallowing is difficult; topical application is preferred, or certain ingredients need to be avoided.

Every compounded medication is prepared according to a valid prescription and tailored to the individual patient. Whether you are looking to enhance your lifespan or treat a condition, talk to one of our Westmoreland pharmacists to find out how we can help.

Weight management is not one-size-fits-all.

Hormones, metabolism, insulin resistance, appetite regulation, medications, and lifestyle factors can all influence a person’s ability to reach and maintain their goals. That is why an individualized approach can be an important part of a comprehensive care plan.

When commercially available medications do not meet a patient’s specific needs, Westmoreland Pharmacy can work with their healthcare provider to prepare customized compounded options. Depending on the prescription, formulations may be tailored by strength, dosage form, or ingredient profile to support the provider’s treatment plan.

Successful weight management begins with understanding the whole person. Talk with your healthcare provider to determine whether a compounded medication may be appropriate as part of your individualized journey.
