It was a special day at LWSRA as we welcomed back our third Executive Director, Marcia Bixby (formerly Marcia Wingerd), who served the Association from 1981–1991. 🎉

Marcia spent the day touring our facility, exploring the Sensory Garden, visiting the park, checking out our Sensory Buses, and reminiscing over photo albums from her time at LWSRA. She also had the opportunity to catch up with Executive Director Keith Wallace through a FaceTime call and see firsthand how the agency has grown over the past several decades.

We are grateful for the leaders who helped shape LWSRA's history and proud to celebrate the people whose dedication laid the foundation for where we are today. Thank you, Marcia, for taking the time to visit and share in our 50th anniversary celebration!

Stay tuned for her 50 for 50 interview 👀

Week 2 of Summer Day Camp was packed with adventure, exploration, and plenty of fun! ☀️😎

Campers cooled off at the Manhattan Splash Pad, Frankfort Splash Pad, and Lincoln-Way East Pool, enjoyed a sweet visit from Kona Ice, and explored the beautiful Sensory Garden in Lisle. We also made stops at Stan's Donuts and the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center.

Our teens took a trip to Lincoln Park Zoo, while our youth campers explored the Museum of Science and Industry! From animal encounters and hands-on exhibits to outdoor adventures and tasty treats, there was something for everyone.

Another amazing week of making memories, building friendships, and trying new experiences!

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Paul Schaffer, a former member of the LWSRA Board of Directors.

During Lana Graser’s time as Director, she approached the Board with the need for LWSRA to have its own recreation facility. At that time, we were receiving only about half of our requests for gym and classroom space, and it was becoming clear that to grow and better serve our participants, LWSRA needed a home of its own.

Paul, along with the Board, strongly supported that vision. He was a stickler for a balanced budget and believed in providing quality programs, but he also understood the importance of planning for the future. His support and leadership helped strengthen our commitment to growth, fiscal responsibility, and the pursuit of an LWSRA Recreation Center.

Paul was a positive force for the agency and played an important role in helping shape the future of LWSRA. His service and dedication will not be forgotten.

This past weekend, members of our Bull Hawks Boccia team competed at the GLASA Great Lakes Games in Partnership with The Hartford, a premier multi-day competition that brings together developmental through elite Paralympic athletes from across the region.

We are proud to congratulate Colleen Musselman on earning 1st Place and Justin Hillman on taking 2nd Place in their respective Boccia divisions! 🎉

The excitement doesn't stop there—next week, Colleen and Justin will represent Team USA at the 2026 World Boccia Challenger in Birmingham, Alabama (June 16–23), competing against some of the world's top Boccia athletes.

Congratulations to Colleen, Justin, and all of our Bull Hawks athletes for their hard work, dedication, and outstanding representation of LWSRA. We wish Team USA the best of luck next week!

🍿✨ Double Good Days at Kohl Children’s Museum was a popping success! ✨🍿

On Sunday, we had an amazing time meeting so many new friends while sharing the fun of adaptive recreation. Coach Mak spent the afternoon teaching and playing wheelchair basketball and leading games like Sharks and Minnows.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to play, learn, and connect with us. We loved spending the day with you and can't wait to see some of our new friends again soon!
