Why Blood Donations Matter for Sickle Cell

• Critical Need: Patients with sickle cell disease often require regular blood transfusions—sometimes dozens each year—to manage severe pain, prevent strokes, and protect vital organs.

• The Importance of Matching: While any blood type helps, the most effective blood matches for sickle cell patients often come from donors of the same racial and ethnic background. For example, a large percentage of African American donors share specialized blood antigen profiles (such as Ro) that closely match patients.

• Sickle Cell Trait Screening: The American Red Cross screens donations from self-identified Black or African American, minority and multiracial donors for the sickle cell trait to help find compatible matches and provide donors with health insights.

Today, we celebrate Warrior Phillip treatment at Manning Family Children's Center. Phillip underwent groundbreaking gene therapy, an innovative treatment that uses a patient's own genetically modified stem cells to help the body produce healthier red blood cells. His journey included months of preparation, stem cell collection, blood exchange procedures, chemotherapy and a challenging recovery.

Phillip rang that bell to celebrate the functional treatment of his sickle cell disease! Phillip is the second person and first child to receive the groundbreaking treatment in Louisiana. During the ceremony, the hospital unveiled a custom Lego display in honor of Phillip’s love of Legos. We also heard remarks from NFL legend Archie Manning and NFL sickle cell ambassador Tevin Coleman, who joined as a guest of Genetix, the company that manufactured Phillip’s cells using LYFGENIA - a one-time gene therapy to treat sickle cell disease in patients 12 years of age or older and a history of vaso-occlusive events. This is the first time the LYFGENIA product has been used in Louisiana.

Today, progress was made.
Today lives were changed.
Today, we celebrate.
Tomorrow , we get back to work pushing education, research, awareness and resources.

Our Superhero Warrior Phillip Mullin

For most of his life, Phillip Mullin never knew when a sickle cell crisis would strike. By age 15, he had been hospitalized more than 100 times as his family searched for answers and treatments that could finally change the course of his disease.

That search led them from their home in Alexandira, Louisiana to Manning Family Children's, where Phillip underwent groundbreaking gene therapy, an innovative treatment that uses a patient's own genetically modified stem cells to help the body produce healthier red blood cells. His journey included months of preparation, stem cell collection, blood exchange procedures, chemotherapy and a challenging recovery.

This Friday, Phillip will ring the bell to celebrate the functional treatment of his sickle cell disease! Please pay for Warrior Cassius.
He is currently admitted at children's hospital. He went in last night due to chest and back pain, and a headache that would not respond to any home meds. He also has rib pain, and overall just feeling bad. They tried managing the pain at home for a few days. Friday night he looked real rough and by Saturday morning he had lost his color.

He perked up just a bit after meds and a shower so we thought we could make it to his appointment on Tuesday without seeing the ER. But last night the pain went up a notch and he asked to go in to Children's. He said he could not wait and asked to be taken in immediately.

X-rays currently showing pneumonia. He's being treated with IV antibiotics and meds. He said his pain is currently at an 8-10. His Hematologist saw him this morning and confirmed he'll be transfused while admitted.

If you know anything about right now and the drastic temp change then you know it's hard on people with Sickle Cell Disease.
We are asking you to pray for Cassius and any other Warrior experiencing a crisis right now.
