Here in New Orleans, some children carry the weight of trauma and deep, unseen pain. While many show incredible resilience, too many are overlooked and left without support.

When children are forgotten, it can lead to despair, self-harm, or cycles of violence.

At U R Herd, our tailored trauma-informed equine-assisted, EMDR therapy program empowers them to build trust, manage emotions, and develop confidence, paving the way for transformative change across generations.

Fundamentally, we’re all just trying to survive and to find a sense of safety from which to live our lives.

And, we all more or less need the same fundamental things:

- To feel SAFE: physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually
- To feel seen
- To be heard
- To be understood
- To be accepted just as we are
- To be valued for who we are
- To be witnessed
- To be treated with kindness, compassion and respect
- To be encouraged to reveal our incredible authentic self and soul
- To feel we belong somewhere and to others
- And, to be loved.

None of us can learn, grow or heal if these basic human conditions are missing from our interactions.

None us will feel safe enough to be able to take-in information, process it, or our own thoughts, feelings or bodily sensations, or indeed feel able to genuinely engage with a person/people if these key ingredients are absent.

And most assuredly, healing absolutely cannot take place when any of these essential pieces are missing.

If we can remember this in all of our interactions and relationships with people, then we can start to create really safe and healing, authentic spaces.

Whether we’re engaging with colleagues, clients or students, if we keep this fundamental wisdom and understanding front and centre in all that we do, then we’re contributing to true healing for all involved.

And maybe then, we’ll each of us, feel safe enough to soften our defences, open our hearts and move gently beyond survival mode, a little more each time, as we begin to dip our toes into the beautiful wellspring of thriving and wholeness.

The heart of an average adult horse weighs about 4–5 kg — nearly 10 times heavier than a human heart.

A horse's resting heart rate is around 28–40 beats per minute, but it can rise up to 240 during stress or intense activity.

The horse's heart is incredibly powerful — it can pump over 60 liters of blood per minute during running.

Human emotions can affect a horse's heart rate. Studies show that horses "read" human moods and mirror them.

During calm interaction, the heart rates of the human and horse can synchronize — a phenomenon known as bioelectrical resonance.

Horses sense a person's presence even before physical contact — their heart reacts to energy changes nearby.
