How much time did you spend outside today? ♨️

In the summer, you probably spend more time in the sun than you realize. Between everyday activities, running errands, exercising, working, or enjoying time outdoors, those minutes can add up. During UV Safety Month, remember to wear your sunglasses and protect your skin with broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, shade, and protective clothing.

Sun protection isn't just for vacations. It's an everyday habit that helps protect your overall health.

Wound Wednesday Tip!

No significant difference in treatment outcomes.

Hydrocolloid dressings cost between $1.00 to $5.00 per individual patch, making them significantly more expensive upfront than petroleum jelly. In contrast, a 13-ounce tub of petroleum jelly costs about $3.00 to $5.00β€”equating to less than $0.40 per ounce. However, hydrocolloids can stay on for up to 7 days, which saves money on extra bandages and daily care.

Authors of a JAMA Dermatology study investigated whether a one-time application of hydrocolloid dressing (HCD) for one week after excisional surgery affects scar appearance and surgical complications compared to daily petroleum ointment.

Surgeon and patient ratings for overall appearance were clinically comparable.

The HCD group had higher, but not statistically significant, rates of adverse events, including postoperative bleeding (20.6% for HCD vs. 8.8% for petroleum), wound dehiscence (6.2% vs. 0%), and surgical site pain (21.2% vs. 12.3%).

No patients required postoperative antibiotics.

The authors concluded that HCD yields similar scar appearance and complication rates as daily petroleum ointment.
