A massive project meant to protect Staten Island’s East Shore has seen costs nearly quadruple to $2.3 billion since it first gained traction over a decade ago.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ South Shore of Staten Island Coastal Storm Risk Management Project, more commonly known as the East Shore Seawall, has ballooned from its first official total cost estimate of about $615 million to the current $2.3 billion behemoth since 2016.

The Advance/SILive.com’s first report of plans for the project dates to June 2015 with a cost estimate of $579 million and a completion date in 2021.
