Lauren Krueger is a climate activist, writer, and editor (https://www.laurenkrueger.com/home) who is highlighted in my new book, Psychotherapy for Climate Change.

Lauren exemplifies how creativity, passion, and patience produce synergy for changemaking. Lauren explored various avenues for spearheading climate action. She used her skill set in video editing to help Field Team 6, a group of former reality television writers who motivate people to register and vote for eco-friendly political candidates.

When her Rabbi asked what her synagogue needed, Lauren suggested a sustainability committee. She has since organized projects through it with other members who care about environmentalism.

Lauren has also collaborated with Dayenu, a Jewish climate action group, thus exemplifying the importance of coalition building in empowering a cause.

Finding purpose in fighting climate change is facilitated by 1. Understanding your strengths and how they can be channeled into pro-environmental action; 2. Recognizing your own psychological needs (i.e. for creative expression, meaningful projects, etc.); 3. Being open to various avenues for making a difference, including being willing to start small while preparing yourself for larger opportunities and 4. Making connections with people who support your work.

I am grateful to Lauren for taking the time to share her story and offer insights for my book.

Mor Keshet MPS LCAT, Mor Keshet Art Therapist is an integrative eco-art therapist based in Huntington, New York. She is a brilliant trailblazer in the climate psychology world. Mor’s innovative work is highlighted in my new book Psychotherapy for Climate Change.

Mor has taught workshops, as well as written moving and informative articles and essays about fostering resilience through nature-based creative expression. She authored the paper, “Integrative Eco Art Therapy: Addressing Humanity’s Fractured Attachment to Nature” (2025), in which she described her use of Integrative Eco Art Therapy (IEAT). This approach involves using analogies rooted in nature to help clients recognize their potential for adaptation and growth.

Mor graciously met with me for an interview while I was writing Psychotherapy for Climate Change. She allowed me to share her insights in my book, and I am incredibly grateful!

Mor and I are both members of the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America (CPA-NA), and together, we walked with the CPA-NA in the 2023 March Against Fossil Fuels in Manhattan.

Before all of that, though, I was introduced to Mor through a mutual friend, Liz (Elzbieta) Solis, who designed the social media posts about my book’s endorsements that I featured over the past month.

Liz is a kind friend, a wonderful listener, and an intelligent collaborator. People like her not only show curiosity about others’ lives and concerns, as she did about my interest in the mental health effects of the climate crisis, but they also actively encourage and elevate others, as she did by introducing me to Mor.

We can’t allow environmental devastation to destroy the very thing that makes us human, our connections with others. In turn, I believe it is these connections that will help us survive and thrive in the face of the climate crisis.

I feel honored by Dr. Jesse Homan's endorsement of my book, Psychotherapy for Climate Change. Using Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills to manage the complicated and intense emotions that climate change can evoke is an important aspect of the book, and when it comes to DBT for eco-distress, Jesse is truly an expert!

Jesse is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, and co-chair of the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America's creative arts committee. He has written about using DBT to help people heal from invalidation of their eco-distress. In his work, he has explained how DBT can help people with eco-distress thrive by guiding them to act on their values for environmental sustainability without jeopardizing their well-being or relationships.

Jesse approaches the topic of curbing hopelessness in the face of the climate crisis with sensitivity, compassion, and wisdom.

I am grateful to him for reviewing the chapter of my book about DBT for eco-distress, “Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Turning the Faucet Off on Eco-guilt, Anger, and Despair,” and offering his insights.

I am very thankful for Dr. Thomas Doherty's endorsement of my book, Psychotherapy for Climate Change!

Thomas is a NY-Times-featured clinical and environmental psychologist, a co-host (with scholar Panu Pihkala) of the podcast, Climate Change and Happiness (https://climatechangeandhappiness.com/), and the author of an award-winning self-help book called Surviving Climate Anxiety (https://www.thomasdoherty.com/surviving-climate-anxiety).

He has written and spoken extensively about the mental health effects of climate change. I feel more enriched, educated, and inspired by every opportunity to learn from his wisdom and practical guidance.

And he is not all talk. Thomas has shown in his mentorship that he believes in human potential to build momentum for systemic change.

Nobody is too small or insignificant to contribute to solutions, and if you live on this planet, you are connected to it through some aspect your values and identity.

Some time ago, I completed one of Thomas’ workshops for mental health professionals. His training was pivotal to my professional development as a climate-aware clinician.

Thomas also encouraged me to write about my ideas for using Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) to help people with extreme perfectionism cope with eco-distress in healthy and constructive ways.

I talk about Thomas’ work in several parts of my book, such as in sections about environmental identity, environmental values, and in the chapter on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Psychotherapy for Climate Change explores how tools from several forms of CBT can help people find meaning and purpose through individual and collective action.

Today is the release date for Psychotherapy for Climate Change!

Take-home points from the book:

*Eco-distress is a valid response to the climate crisis. Engaging in pro-environmental action can help you manage eco-distress constructively.

However, it’s also essential to address the interpersonal, emotional, and cognitive obstacles that may stymie our best efforts.

Skills from cognitive-behavioral approaches, including DBT, RO DBT and ACT can help people navigate stressors that can come up when we try to take action.

Applying these skills helps ensure that pro-environmental actions are healthy, fulfilling, and empowering.

Some things you will learn:
*How to find common ground with those who think differently about the climate crisis.

*How to cultivate and honor your contributions to pro-environmental work even when you struggle to feel like you are making a difference.

*How to effectively join with other environmental advocates by addressing maladaptive perfectionism, fear of uncertainty, fear of negative evaluation from others, and the overwhelm of daily-life pressures.

I am thrilled to have received an endorsement for my new book, Psychotherapy for Climate Change, from Dr. James McKowen!

I’ve known James for the past few years through the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America’s (CPA-NA's) Youth Subcommittee, of which he serves as chair. It's been enriching and enjoyable to see his incredible leadership skills firsthand!

One reason James’ endorsement means so much to me is that he is a role model for how we can break through silos to unite in the common cause of climate action.

James is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School & Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and the Clinical Director of the Addiction Recovery Management Service (ARMS). He is also the Co-Chair of the Psychiatry Climate and Mental Health Initiative (CMHI), an Associate of MGH Center for Environment and Health, and an Affiliate Faculty member of the Center for Climate, Health, and the Global Environment (C-CHANGE) at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

James has creatively integrated his expertise in clinical and research psychology with efforts to address the effects of climate change.

James is a powerhouse of inspiration for projects and community outreach. For example, he has directed his research towards better understanding climate-change emotions in youth.

James has also successfully extended his clinical talent beyond the therapy room by facilitating climate cafés, as well as providing informative and accessible lectures about the effects of heat on health and well-being.

James was an invaluable resource for Psychotherapy for Climate Change. He graciously met with me on several occasions to share information and insights that enriched the pages of this work.

Importantly, he has also been a source of moral support. James’ efforts to be inclusive and to elevate his colleagues speak volumes about the kind of character and spirit that is so critical to advocating for environmental justice.

I am incredibly grateful for Linda Goldman’s (https://www.grievingchildren.net) endorsement of my book, Psychotherapy for Climate Change: A Practical Guide to Transcending Differences, which is available for pre-order from Routledge/Taylor & Francis Books (http://www.routledge.com/9781032776668) and Amazon.

Linda is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and a National Certified Counselor (NBCC). She specializes in working with children and families who are dealing with grief and trauma.

Linda is also the author of 12 books, the most recent of which, Climate Change and Youth: From Anxiety and Depression to Activism, offers a comprehensive guide for parents, teachers, and practitioners to help children cope with the climate crisis in healthy and constructive ways.

Linda has been a mentor throughout my journey of writing Psychotherapy for Climate Change. Her wisdom is highlighted in several chapters.

Linda provides insights into how natural disasters affect children psychologically, as well as what we can do to support children and their families.

She offers guidance on how parents can help their children engage in sustainable behavior and pro-environmental action.

My enriching conversations with Linda also inspired me to write about the power of intergenerational collaboration in addressing climate change.

I will highlight others who supported this project in follow-up posts.

Humor is a coping tool that is free and accessible to all, and you don't have to be a comedic genius to benefit from it!

While the healing effects of laughter are undeniable, humor has taken on an even deeper meaning in my life. I've seen, both personally and professionally, how it can transform neurodivergent traits like literal thinking, which I felt embarrassed about in the past, into powerhouses for creativity.

In this post, I explore the value of literal humor and how it can be neuro affirmative, as well as make for a more fun and compassionate world.

If you've ever felt distressed about climate change and environmental devastation, but powerless in being part of the solution, I hear you 100%.

You try to join an advocacy group but can't find a role that fits your skill set and time availability. A group's leader doesn't respond to your email inquiries. You feel embarrassed about not being up on the latest environmental legislation. All the while, you feel like you're failing at individual efforts, like washing a food container only to realize it can't be recycled.

I've been there, and that's why I wrote this book, for people who struggle like me as well as for mental health professionals who work with clients struggling with existential dread surrounding climate change and environmental devastation.

We tell our clients that the solution to eco-distress is to engage in pro-environmental action and climate activism, and it is. However, we need to be able to guide others, and ourselves, through the complex emotions and psychological issues, such as maladaptive perfectionism, that can be obstacles to action if they are not worked through constructively.

I wrote this book in hopes of being part of the solution by offering suggestions for how to use CBT to help others feel empowered in the face of the climate crisis.

Psychotherapy for Climate Change: A Practical Guide to Transcending Differences offers insights into how improving social connection is part of healing our relationship with the planet. Drawing upon cognitive-behavioral techniques from conventional CBT, DBT, RO DBT, and ACT, the book provides guidance for navigating emotional and interpersonal challenges, such as those resulting from perfectionism, that arise in our efforts to advocate for a sustainable earth.

More information about the book can be found on the Routledge/Taylor & Francis website: www.routledge.com/9781032776668

This book has been my passion project, and I genuinely hope that it will contribute to the momentum building among mental health practitioners in this space.
