Treating acne scars is one of the most challenging but gratifying parts of my job. Long-standing cystic acne can lead to textural skin changes including 3 types of scars:

1. Rolling scars: mild sloping indentations

2. Boxcar scars: sharply demarcated depressions

3. Ice-pick scars: small, narrow but deep indentations

⚡️TREATMENT for these scars depends on their type and severity and often requires multiple sessions of a combination of different procedures:

1. Lasers: fractionated, non-ablative

2. Microneedling

3. Chemical peeling: TCA CROSS technique

4. Filler injections

5. Subcision

This classification is based on the hue of our skin AND its reaction to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

In summary: lighter skin types (I-III) will often burn when exposed to the sun while darker skin types (IV-VI) will always tan.

What is vitiligo? And what causes it?

Vitiligo is a benign skin condition characterized by patches of pigment loss that result in porcelain white.

It can be quite beautiful but also very distressing for patients who have it.

The cause is uncertain but it is known to result from an autoimmune attack of our pigment cells (melanocytes).

Treatments include:

1️⃣ topical creams (I’ve had some great success with the newly approved Opzelura!)

2️⃣ ultraviolet light phototherapy

3️⃣ punch autografting

4️⃣ microneedling + topical bimatoprost

Nail health is an integral part of the field of dermatology. 💅🏻

Mounting evidence warns against the use of UV gel manicures:

Long-term, repeat exposure to UV radiation increases the risk of skin cancer in exposed fingers and the skin around the nails.

Best to avoid gel manicures cured with UV light or be very diligent about applying a broad-spectrum sunblock to all exposed skin prior to use.
