When Justin Shepard suffered a right shoulder dislocation during a boxing match on July 26, 2025, he was forced to step away from the sport he loves.

Six months after undergoing a right shoulder arthroscopic instability repair with remplissage procedure, Justin is back in the gym, stronger, more stable, and training again for his return to boxing.

Stories like Justin’s are a reminder of what recovery is really about: helping patients get back to the activities and passions that matter most to them.

Our Pediatric Orthopedics team was well represented at the recent Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) Meeting in Orlando.

From podium presentations to reconnecting with colleagues and former trainees, our faculty were proud to contribute to the ongoing conversations shaping the future of pediatric orthopedic care.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to collaborate, share knowledge, and help advance excellence in care for children and families everywhere.

In trauma surgery, there’s no such thing as autopilot. Every injury, every patient, and every surgery brings a new challenge to solve.

What drew Dr. Crocco to orthopedic trauma was exactly that: the constant need to think critically, adapt in real time, and treat the patient beyond what’s seen on an X-ray. Even when two fractures look similar, no two cases are ever truly the same.

It’s about having a plan, staying ready for the unexpected, and finding the best path forward for every patient who comes through the door.

Please join us in congratulating our outstanding residents on their exceptional achievements at the annual New York Society for Surgery of the Hand Residents and Fellows Conference.

Among 53 abstracts submitted from 9 institutions, only 15 podium presentations and 11 poster presentations were selected for the meeting.

Emma Johnson, PGY3, delivered a podium presentation on reevaluating antibiotic prophylaxis in adult upper extremity surgery with hardware and was awarded a NYSSH-funded scholarship to attend the upcoming American Society for Surgery of the Hand Annual Meeting this September in Boston.

Cris Escalera, PGY2, presented a poster on evolving surgical techniques in pediatric brachial plexus birth injuries and earned 2nd place for Best Poster at the conference.

Congratulations to both residents on these well-deserved recognitions and for representing our department so well.

For years, shoulder pain kept Mary Alice Hinek from fully enjoying the things she loves most. From watercolor painting and gardening to training rescue dogs at her local animal shelter, even everyday movement had become difficult.

Now, six months after her right total shoulder replacement and 12 years after her left shoulder replacement, she’s back to doing it all with less pain and more freedom.

Mary Alice credits Dr. Gruson and his team for helping her regain her mobility, independence, and quality of life. Stories like hers are a reminder of how life-changing the right care can be.

From training at Montefiore Einstein to returning as an attending physician, Dr. Catherine Mackey’s journey has come full circle.

“I knew even before I left for additional training that I wanted to come back here to work. It’s an incredible place. I love working with this patient population, and it’s such an honor to care for the children and young adults of the Bronx.”

After completing her orthopedic surgery residency at Montefiore Einstein and a pediatric orthopedic fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Dr. Mackey returned to Montefiore Einstein to provide specialized care for pediatric and adolescent musculoskeletal conditions, including neuromuscular disease, limb deformity, foot and ankle disorders, and traumatic injuries.

Dr. Mackey also highlighted the collaborative culture at Montefiore Einstein, where complex medical and surgical decisions are approached as a team to provide the best possible care for every patient.

We’re proud to have Dr. Mackey caring for our community and advancing the future of pediatric orthopedic care.

One year ago, Gloria made the decision to take her life back after struggling with severe hip pain from arthritis that made even simple movements difficult. Hip replacement surgery gave her that second chance.

Now, one year later, she is thriving. Pain-free, stronger, and back to doing what she loves every day.

“Seeing her now, so happy, so active, and full of confidence, is exactly why we do what we do. Her recovery has been incredible.” – Dr. Kamara

Caolan has been under the care of Dr. Karkenny since he was just 5 years old, managing his cerebral palsy. Over time, increasing stiffness in his legs made walking more difficult, eventually limiting him to a wheelchair for most of the day and keeping him from activities he loved, like gym class.

Six months ago, Caolan underwent surgery with Dr. Karkenny to lengthen tight tendons and place guided growth screws to help his knees develop into a straighter position. Today, he’s not only relearning how to walk...he’s excitedly sharing updates about the dance he’s learning in school and a waterpark trip he has circled on his calendar.

The final photo shows Caolan before surgery. His journey is a powerful reminder that seeing a pediatric orthopedic specialist doesn’t always mean immediate surgery. Careful monitoring over time allows us to determine if, and when, intervention is the right step for each child’s growth and long-term mobility.

Just six months into recovery, Caolan has already made incredible progress. We’re excited to watch him continue to grow stronger every day.
