Dr. Eric Fornari and chief resident D’Arcy Marsh are back from Guayaquil, Ecuador, where they joined Project Perfect World for a week of global outreach. This was Dr. Fornari’s 10th trip with PPW.

Alongside a team of 23 volunteers from across the U.S., they evaluated patients in clinic, performed 23 complex pediatric orthopedic surgeries, and shared knowledge with local pediatric orthopedic staff and trainees in both directions.

More than 5,000 people a year go to the ER after cutting an avocado. About 2,000 more get hurt carving pumpkins. 🥑🎃

Both injuries usually happen the same way. The knife slips and lands in the hand holding the food, most often the thumb or index finger. Even a small cut can damage a tendon or nerve.

Before you make guac or carve this year’s jack-o’-lantern:
🥑 Lay the avocado flat on a cutting board. Never cut or pit it in your palm.
🥄 Scoop the pit out with a spoon instead of stabbing it with a knife.
🎃 Use a pumpkin carving kit. Kitchen knives get stuck and slip.
✋ Keep your hands and tools dry, work in good light, and cut away from your body.
👧 Let kids draw the design and scoop the seeds while adults do the cutting.

New research including our orthopedic team is shedding light on a growing risk on the road.

Dr. Alexa Karkenny and Dr. Mani Kahn are among the authors of a national study of adult e-skateboard injuries treated in US emergency rooms from 2014 to 2023.

Fractures were the leading injury, and they made up 61% of cases serious enough for a hospital stay.

Xavian lives with a combination of genetic and neurological conditions that have made walking difficult. Dr. Fornari has cared for him for many years, guiding him through several procedures to improve motion in his knees and feet.

Most recently, Dr. Henstenburg and Dr. Karkenny performed a spine fusion to restore his balance and help him sit and walk upright.

Yesterday, Xavian walked down the hallway for us. He has come such a long way, and we couldn't be prouder.

Dr. Eric Fornari was honored to present at the Global Pediatric Hip Symposium in Vancouver, an international meeting coordinated by the Hip Hope Network and the Hippy Lab at BC Children’s Hospital.

Speaking on behalf of the multicenter International Perthes Study Group, Dr. Fornari shared longitudinal research on patient-reported outcomes in children with Perthes disease. This work helps care teams look at the whole child, tracking emotional and social health alongside function and activity as kids recover.

We’re proud to collaborate with thought leaders from around the world to bring our patients and families the most up-to-date care for complex hip conditions.
