Psychoanalysis offers the most comprehensive understanding of human motivation, its focus extending beyond what lies within the realm of conscious awareness to the powerful unconscious forces that drive people. The course of study covers the theory of psychoanalysis, including psychological development in health and pathology, from Freud’s earliest discoveries through the latest developments in contemporary schools of thought.

Interested in studying ? Recent NYGSP graduate Douglas Mackliff shares his reasons for attending our program:

How did you find the program and why did you choose the program?

I became aware of the program through a flyer I saw for years in one of my undergraduate classes. On the last day of my senior year, I took a photo and thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to check it out. I attended an open house and found that I really liked the orientation. It really clicked with me. I felt at home. It was the only program I applied to.

Why do you want to become a psychoanalyst?

Ever since I was a child I was drawn to the field of psychology. It just felt natural to me–listening, identifying emotional patterns, helping people to work through their issues. Studying psychoanalysis is more than just an academic pursuit, it has helped me to get to know and understand myself more deeply. I hope to use what I have learned to help other people experience the great feeling of growing in these ways.

What are things that you think are special about our school and/or modern psychoanalysis?

I really enjoy the process-oriented classes. Everyone communicates openly on both an intellectual and emotional level. I really look forward to the classes, which are different from any other I have ever experienced. Some people have the mistaken idea that psychoanalysis is dated, but I find that modern psychoanalysis is very applicable to the problems people experience in contemporary society. I believe that if psychoanalysis becomes more accessible, people will find it the most enticing option among the various approaches to therapy.
