Do you worry about supply? How much does a newborn eat anyways? Well the truth is, they don’t need much! But then why do some newborns like to eat ALL the time and mothers become worried that their baby is not receiving enough food? The baby may cry unless being constantly nursed. So what is happening? In most cases, it is just that the baby may not be satisfied with the first milk that comes from mama, colostrum, but this does not mean your baby needs formula to supplement. I’m not against formula but I prefer that it’s given when truly needed. This is not the case as long as the baby has at least 5-6 wet diapers + 2-3 p**p diapers in 24 hours. This baby is not satisfied because colostrum contains very little fat. Colostrum contains LOTS of protein, antibodies, and carbohydrates. Which is EXACTLY what the baby needs. (Too much fat would be very difficult for a newborn to digest). Some babies just need A LOT of colostrum. But don’t worry, once your milk comes in (2-4 days postpartum), your baby will start receiving more fats and be satiated for longer periods of time (aka, more sleep for you!). So hang in there mama! This is normal and you are doing a great job!
