Part 2
I walked in and before I said hello, he had the whole room laughing. In his eighties he was still playing tennis, still playing golf, still running the show for his family.

Fifteen years in geriatric care taught me this: it’s never just genetics. The patients who stay active and engaged age completely differently than the ones who don’t.

Hearing plays a bigger part in that than people think. When conversation gets hard to follow, people quietly opt out, and that isolation costs the brain more than the ears.

He’s still in every conversation. That’s not luck.

Come see us. Let’s keep you in the conversation too.

That full, underwater feeling in your ear has an actual name. It usually shows up with fluid, an ear infection, or pressure from a cold or a flight, and here’s the good news: it’s usually temporary and treatable. The earlier you catch it, the faster it clears. A normal amount of earwax is a good thing. It’s your ear’s built-in security guard, trapping dust and bacteria before they ever reach your eardrum. But managing it yourself with a cotton swab usually backfires, it just pushes wax deeper and can pack it against the eardrum. Let a professional clear it out properly instead.

And if sounds have started feeling muffled, don’t assume it’s “just wax.” That’s also one of the earliest signs of hearing loss, and untreated hearing loss has been linked to faster cognitive decline. Either way, it’s worth having your ears checked properly.

At Fifth Avenue Hearing, we evaluate the whole picture, wax, hearing, and everything in between, so you get an answer instead of a guess. 👂✨

Most people don’t realize they’re developing hearing loss because it happens gradually. The first signs are often noticed by the people around you.

If your spouse, children, or friends keep repeating themselves, or you’ve been turning the TV up a little more every year, don’t ignore it. A simple hearing evaluation can give you answers and help you stay connected to the conversations that matter most.

Most people think hearing loss means turning the TV louder.

It often starts much earlier.

If you hear well one-on-one but struggle to follow conversations in restaurants, family dinners, or busy places, it may be because your brain is working much harder to separate speech from background noise.

Many people tell us:
“I can hear people talking… I just can’t understand what they’re saying.”

You don’t have to guess.

A comprehensive hearing evaluation can identify what’s happening and help you understand your options before it begins affecting your confidence, relationships, and quality of life.

Most people assume that blocked ears mean earwax.

In reality, one of the biggest surprises in my office is that many patients have perfectly clean ear canals. What they’re actually experiencing is hearing loss.

If your ears always feel “plugged,” voices sound muffled, or you keep asking people to repeat themselves, don’t keep guessing.

A simple hearing evaluation can tell you what’s really going on.
