Scientists have completed the first fully mapped central nervous system of a male fruit fly, tracing 166,691 neurons across its brain and ventral nerve cord, the insect equivalent of a spinal cord.

Called a connectome, this detailed wiring diagram reveals how neurons are organized and linked throughout the male fly’s nervous system. The dataset gives researchers a powerful new way to investigate how the brain produces complex actions, from sensing the environment and controlling movement to courtship and aggression.

The breakthrough becomes even more valuable when paired with the female fruit fly brain connectome released in 2024, which contains roughly 140,000 neurons. For the first time, scientists can directly compare neural maps from both sexes of an animal known for complex social behavior.

Capsaicin, the chemical that gives chili peppers their heat, has shown effects against melanoma cells in laboratory studies. In cultured human melanoma cell lines, researchers found that capsaicin reduced cell viability and activated pathways associated with apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death.

Scientists observed increased activity of proteins such as caspase-3 and PARP after melanoma cells were exposed to capsaicin. These proteins are involved in the cell’s breakdown process. Some experiments also found that capsaicin triggered autophagy, a cellular recycling response that can sometimes help stressed cancer cells survive. That complexity matters because cancer biology rarely has a single switch.

This is promising early research, but it does not show that eating chili peppers treats or prevents melanoma. The findings come mainly from cell experiments, where scientists can use concentrations and conditions that do not directly translate to the human body. Capsaicin is not an approved melanoma treatment, and anyone with a suspicious mole or diagnosed skin cancer should seek advice from a dermatologist or oncology team.

Think REM Does All the Work?
Deep sleep also matters. This stage slows brain activity and helps your body recover from the day. Better rest is more than extra hours.

Feeling sleepy around someone you love does not prove that you love them more. But there is a possible reason for that peaceful feeling: safe and supportive relationships can help the body lower its state of alertness and support better rest.

Research has found an association between social support and healthier sleep outcomes. Studies also show that stronger relationship quality is linked, on average, to better sleep quality and longer sleep. Emotional comfort, affectionate touch, and a sense of safety can influence stress and physical arousal, which are important for falling asleep and staying asleep.

Oxytocin is often part of this conversation because it is linked to bonding and affectionate behavior. However, science has not confirmed that oxytocin directly causes people to feel sleepier beside one specific person. Sleep and relationships are complex, shaped by connection, conflict, routines, anxiety, and many other factors.

A cancer treatment is showing an early and remarkable signal in severe rheumatoid arthritis. In a first-in-human phase 1 trial, six people whose disease had not responded to multiple therapies received a single infusion of CD19 CAR T-cell therapy. Disease activity fell in every participant, and three reached sustained medication-free remission during follow-up of up to one year.

CAR T-cell therapy uses a person’s own T cells, modified in a laboratory to recognize CD19, a marker found on B cells. In rheumatoid arthritis, some B cells can help drive inflammation and produce autoantibodies. By deeply reducing these cells, researchers believe the treatment could reset part of the immune system rather than simply suppress symptoms. Participants had stopped disease-modifying rheumatoid arthritis drugs under close trial supervision before treatment.

This is not a cure and it is not ready for routine care. The study included only six people, had no control group, and was designed mainly to assess safety and early effects. All participants experienced cytokine release syndrome, although it was limited to mild or moderate severity, and the study reported no serious adverse events. Larger controlled studies with longer follow-up are now essential to confirm whether this approach can provide lasting remission for more people living with treatment-resistant rheumatoid arthritis.

Why Does Your Shoulder Hurt?
It’s not always “just sleeping wrong.” Repetitive overhead movement can irritate tendons, making lifting painful. Your shoulder is complex, so persistent pain deserves attention.

Could a higher radiation dose give some men with high-risk prostate cancer a stronger chance of staying free from progression? A randomized phase 3 trial involving 505 patients suggests it could when combined with long-term androgen deprivation therapy, also called ADT.

Researchers compared external-beam radiotherapy doses of 80 Gy and 70 Gy in men with high-risk localized prostate cancer receiving long-term ADT. After 5 years, biochemical or clinical progression-free survival was 91.4% in the 80 Gy group, compared with 88.1% in the 70 Gy group. At 10 years, the difference was larger: 83.6% versus 72.2%. Progression-free survival means participants had not developed a rise in PSA meeting the study definition or clinical evidence that the cancer had progressed.

The results point to dose-escalated radiotherapy as a potential option worth discussing in specialist care for suitable patients. The trial reported no overall increase in serious short-term toxicity, and long-term adverse event rates were similar between groups. Still, treatment plans depend on cancer stage, overall health, expected benefits, and possible side effects.

Researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience have identified a possible brain signal linked to severe suicidal thoughts and recovery. The finding centers on P2RX7, a receptor involved in immune and stress-related processes in the brain. Scientists say it could offer an important new path for understanding su***de prevention, resilience, and future mental health treatments.

The research examined brain tissue donated to the Netherlands Brain Bank. At first, researchers compared people with mood disorders to those without them, but they found no clear difference in the brain region studied. A closer look at people who had experienced severe suicidal thoughts revealed a more specific pattern involving P2RX7.

Importantly, this does not mean P2RX7 can diagnose suicidal thoughts or predict who will struggle. Researchers still need to confirm whether the same changes can be detected in living people. But the study suggests the brain may change during periods of severe distress and may also contain biological processes connected to recovery.

Drinking enough fluids during pregnancy is important for circulation, digestion, temperature control, and the body’s many changing needs. Researchers are also exploring whether a mother’s hydration status may be linked with markers of stress, including cortisol.

An observational study published in Nutrients examined prenatal hydration and maternal stress regulation. Its findings suggest there may be an association between hydration and stress-related biological markers. However, association does not prove that hydration directly lowers cortisol or changes a baby’s brain development.

Coconut water is sometimes included in pregnancy wellness conversations because it contains fluids and electrolytes, including potassium and magnesium. It can be a refreshing option for some people, but it is not a treatment for stress and should not be viewed as a guaranteed way to improve fetal development.

The discovery came from research in mice, where these tiny immune hubs appeared to respond rapidly to brain cancer before distant lymph nodes received the same warning. Scientists found that signals can move from the brain through small channels into the skull bone marrow, where local immune cells may help organize a fast defense.

These structures work similarly to lymph node training centers. They support immune cells involved in antibody production and may give the brain a nearby system for detecting danger. This is important because the brain was once thought to be largely separate from the body’s immune system.

Researchers also found evidence of similar immune cells in human skull bone marrow. However, the fully formed immune hubs and their function were demonstrated in mice, so more human research is needed before this can lead to treatments.
