Baboons rely on their hands for everything from climbing to foraging, so a palm injury is a major threat to their survival. We found this Olive Baboon with a rusted decking screw driven straight into its hand. It took a steady grip to extract it without causing further tissue damage, but we got it out cleanly and applied heavy pressure to stop the bleeding. Human debris like rusted metal roofing can cause serious issues for our native wildlife. We stepped in to help this koala after spotting a shard embedded deep in its foot. Getting the metal out cleanly and applying a protective glue is crucial out here to prevent infection and keep the animal mobile in the canopy. Working with Tasmanian Devils is always high-energy. They are famously feisty, and this one was no exception! We had to carefully secure him to remove a metal staple embedded in his shoulder. Field medicine in the Arctic requires a lot of patience and some heavy-duty tools. This caribou had a nasty piece of rusted wire embedded deep in its leg. Because it was hooked near the tendon, extracting it took a really steady hand to ensure we didn't cause permanent lameness. Working on a narrow alpine ridge is nerve-wracking enough, but it's even more intense when you have a struggling Bighorn Sheep. We found this guy with a rusted iron bolt wedged deep under the keratin of his hoof.
