The Bear in the Old Traditions

The bear has long held a special place in Slavic tradition.

In some old beliefs, he was regarded not simply as an animal, but as one of the oldest spirits of the forest—a powerful being associated with the wild places beyond the edge of the village.

There are traditions suggesting that his true name became taboo and was no longer spoken aloud. Instead, people referred to him indirectly as Medved (медведь)—“the one who knows (or finds) honey.”

Some linguists also connect the older root ber (or the Proto-Germanic berô) with the ancient Indo-European word for “bear.” Echoes of this root can still be found in several European languages.

Whether history, folklore, or a blend of both, I find these stories fascinating. They remind us that our ancestors often viewed the forest as a place inhabited not only by animals, but by memory, mystery, and respect.

🌿

“When we enter the forest, we are guests.”

Yesterday I gathered fragrant petals from wild beach roses (Rosa rugosa) along the New England coast.

Once dried, some will become a gentle herbal tea, while others will find their way into handcrafted candles.

For centuries, people gathered plants not only for food and medicine, but also to celebrate the seasons and bring beauty into everyday life.

I’m grateful to be learning these traditions—one season at a time.

🌿 Always harvest responsibly, taking only what you need and leaving plenty for wildlife and future blooms
