I’ll never understand how someone can look their child in the eyes
And not want to do better

Not want to be softer
Kinder
More present
More healed
More whole

Because the moment I saw them
Everything shifted

I saw every broken piece of myself reflected in their innocence
And I knew
This wasn’t just about raising them
It was about rising for them

Undoing patterns
Breaking cycles
Healing wounds I never asked for
So they don’t have to carry what was never theirs

Because they didn’t ask for a perfect parent
They just needed one willing to try
To grow
To show up again and again and again

So no
I’ll never understand the ones who stay stuck
Who choose pride over progress
Distance over connection
Pain over change

Because one look into their eyes
And I knew
I had to do better
And I still do
Every single day

My worth isn’t tied to how clean my house is
Or how quiet my child is in public
Or how perfectly I pack their lunches
Or whether I answered every message today

Because I’m not here to perform motherhood
I’m here to live it

That means sometimes the sink is full
The laundry isn’t folded
The baby is crying in the checkout line
And I’m just trying to hold it together

But that doesn’t make me less
It makes me real

There’s no prize for being the most put together
No award for pretending you’re fine
No extra credit for hiding the hard parts

So I’m letting go of the pressure to look perfect
To act perfect
To parent perfect

Because my child doesn’t need perfect
They need present
They need love
They need me just as I am

And that is enough

I don’t want to be their first heartbreak
Their first fear
Their first wound to carry into adulthood

I want to be the voice in their head that says
You’re safe
You’re loved
You’re enough

So I raise them gently
Even when I wasn’t raised that way
Even when it would be easier to yell
Even when my patience is running on empty

Because I’m not just raising kids
I’m shaping how they’ll speak to themselves
How they’ll choose partners
How they’ll set boundaries
How they’ll treat their own children someday

I’m raising them gently
So they won’t have to spend years healing from the way I loved them

Let them get messy
Let them splash in puddles
Finger paint with no rules
Dig in the dirt
Smear food on their faces
Get soaked in the rain

Let them live

Because childhood isn’t meant to be neat and perfect
It’s meant to be wild and curious and full of joy

Your laundry might pile up
The floors might be a disaster
But their little hearts will be full

Because kids are washable
And the best memories are always made in the mess

Stop telling boys to man up. Stop telling them real men don’t cry. That message is toxic and it ruins them.

I want my son to know tenderness is strength. Being gentle does not make you weak. Loving people deeply does not make you soft. Crying does not make you broken. It makes you human.

Strength is being brave enough to feel it all. It is standing in your truth even when the world calls you weak for it.

If the only version of masculinity you can imagine is anger, silence, or toughness, then you are raising boys to become men who don’t know how to love.

My son will know better. He will know that his heart is the strongest thing about him.

To my rainbow baby,

You are my proof that love can grow in the same heart that’s been broken. You came after one of the darkest times in my life, when I wasn’t sure if I would ever feel light again. You didn’t erase the storm, but you showed me that even after loss, my heart was still capable of holding joy.

I promise you will never live in the shadow of the sibling who came before you. I will tell you about them, and you will always know that you were wanted and loved just as deeply. You are not here instead of them. You are here in addition to them.

I promise to savor every moment I get with you. The long nights, the belly laughs, even the tears. I know how fragile life can be, and I will not take a single second of yours for granted.

I promise you are more than just a rainbow baby. You are your own whole, beautiful soul. You are not here to fill a hole, you are here to expand my heart in ways I didn’t know were possible.

You are my reminder that even after the hardest storms, love can still bloom. You are my light, my healing, my hope. And I will always love you.

Have the baby.

Even if there’s a big age gap. Even if you’ve already gotten rid of the baby stuff, started sleeping through the night, and finally reached the point where everyone can put their own shoes on.

Have the baby even if starting over sounds a little crazy.

Because there’s something really special about watching your big kids become big siblings. Watching the kid you swear was just your baby carry your new baby around the house. Seeing them make bottles, grab diapers, make the baby laugh, and somehow become their favorite person.

Yes, you’ll be back in diapers while driving someone else to practice. You’ll have a stroller in the trunk next to backpacks and sports equipment. Your days will somehow involve both nap schedules and pr***en problems.

It’s chaotic. It’s a completely different version of motherhood.

But watching all those different ages fit together and become your family?

That part is pretty incredible.

Today is National Rainbow Baby Day 🌈

A rainbow baby is a baby born after loss. After miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss. They are the ray of light that comes after the darkest storm.

But here’s the truth no one prepares you for: joy and grief can live side by side. Holding your rainbow doesn’t erase the pain of the baby you lost. It doesn’t fill the space that will always be missing. But it does remind you that love shows up again, in a new and powerful way.

I think about the promises I’d make to my rainbow baby.
I promise I will always love you.
I promise you won’t live in the shadow of your sibling.
I promise to teach you about them, so you’ll always know you weren’t the start of my motherhood, just the continuation of it.
I promise to savor the moments with you, even the small ones.
I promise that being a rainbow baby won’t be your only identity you are your own whole, beautiful self.
And I promise you are in addition to, not instead of.

Rainbow babies don’t replace the loss, they honor it. They remind us that storms leave scars, but they also make way for light to shine through.

So today, I’m holding space for every parent who has carried grief in one hand and hope in the other. For the ones who know what it feels like to long for what was, while cherishing what is. For the babies we hold in our hearts and the ones we hold in our arms.

Both matter. Both are loved. Both are ours.
