Dr. Fabiana Franco recently published an article in the Journal of Health Service Psychology, an official journal of the National Register of Health Service Psychologists, titled "Recognizing and Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder," examining how DID presents, why it is so often missed, and what genuinely effective treatment requires.
In the article, Dr. Franco examines how DID affects identity, memory, and a person's sense of agency, and makes the case that careful assessment is what separates it from other trauma-related conditions.
She also addresses the connection between DID and chronic developmental trauma, and why effective care does not begin with trauma processing. Safety, stabilization, emotional regulation, and daily functioning come first, with traumatic material addressed gradually.
The article covers:
Why DID is so often missed, and how its symptoms overlap with complex PTSD
How DID affects identity, memory, and a person's sense of agency
The role of chronic developmental trauma in the development of DID
Why stabilization and daily functioning precede trauma processing in effective treatment
