Columbia researchers have launched the first clinical trial to study whether precisely dosed near-infrared light can support human embryo development and improve IVF outcomes.

Columbia’s innovative STAR (S***m Tracking and Recovery) method, which gives men with infertility the chance to have a biological child, was selected as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025!

The method, developed by Hemant Suryawanshi and team at the
Columbia University Fertility Center, analyzes millions of semen images to identify and isolate the few viable s***m for use in IVF. “It can do that in a couple of hours—and so gently that the s***m we recover can be used to fertilize an egg,” says Dr. Zev Williams, director of the Columbia University Fertility Center.

We are are investigating an existing oral therapy that could help slow the process of ovarian aging and delay the onset of menopause.

The VIBRANT study aims to evaluate the use of a low dose of the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin as a way to slow down the release of eggs from women’s ovarian reserve, thereby slowing ovarian aging.
We are looking for women between the ages of 35 and 45 years who have regular menstrual periods. The study is double-blind and placebo-controlled, with participants randomized to receive either weekly oral rapamycin or a placebo, and both the participants and investigators blinded to the assignment.

Researchers at CUFC are looking for new ways to delay menopause

A clinical trial is underway at Columbia Fertility in New York City to see if menopause can be delayed, reducing the number of years people live with the adverse side effects and increasing the number of years to try to grow families before it begins. NBC’s Anne Thompson reports for TODAY.
