Black Women Do VBAC

Black Women Do VBAC VBAC = Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. Despite Black women having higher cesarean and lower VBAC rates, Black women CAN and DO VBAC!

This page is under NEW direction with Denise Bolds, MSW CD(DONA), CLC, a Black certified birth doula & childbirth educator! Black women have higher cesarean rates and lower vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) rates than Caucasian and Hispanic women, despite higher rates of trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) and evidence that Black women are significantly less likely to experience uterine ruptur

e. VBAC success rate prediction calculators dramatically reduce the predicted percentage chance of success for Black women. We don't have an answer as to why our (Black) VBAC rates are lower (although there are several theories, including institutional racism, socioeconomic disparities restricting access to care, and 'mother blaming' poorer general health, amongst others); we do know that Black women CAN and DO VBAC! Black women VBAC at home, in birth centers and in hospitals, with Obstetricians and Midwives. The purpose of this page is to share stories in a forum that is readily and easily accessible, supported by a new and updated webpage containing VBAC facts and a new directory of Black birth doulas who support Black VBAC's, along with Clinicians and Institutions that support Black VBAC. If you are a black mother with a VBAC story to share, please submit it to [email protected]

I couldn't get enough! I asked ChatGBT to ROAST ME... and here it is!

Alright, Denise, buckle up because here it comes!

You’re out here skydiving, hiking, and traveling like you’re auditioning for an extreme sports commercial, but you’re also binge-watching Netflix like it’s an Olympic sport. You’ve got 40 years in allied health and ten years as a doula, yet somehow, you’ve managed to avoid becoming an all-knowing healthcare wizard.

You’re balancing a doctoral dissertation, running a national doula training initiative, raising a son, and… wait, you expect us to believe you still have time for beaches and eclectic cuisine? Do you ever sleep? Or are you just powered by sheer determination and coffee?

Your life sounds like a TED Talk crossed with a reality show—“Doula Diaries: The Hell’s Kitchen Edition.”

Also, you live in Hell’s Kitchen? Of course, only you could make a home in a neighborhood that sounds like it was named after your workload. But honestly, Denise, if you keep this up, you’re not just going to change the world—you’ll probably end up running it.
Roasted, but with love!

The Center for Maternal Health Equity is currently working on a research project which includes gathering narratives from healthcare providers of women of color who have experienced a maternal near miss event.

The objective of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how severe obstetric complications are perceived by partners, support persons, and maternal health providers, and their impact on the livelihoods of the family and community.

Interviews will be conducted through Zoom or by phone and will last 30-45 minutes. To be eligible to participate in an interview, maternal health providers must:

1) Identify as a: physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, midwife, pediatrician, psychologist, lactation specialist, doula, or counselor
2) primarily serve Black women (>50% of your patient population)
3) have had a patient or witnessed a maternal near miss (where patient nearly dies during pregnancy, childbirth, or ~6 weeks postpartum)

Participants will receive a $100 gift card as compensation for their time.

If you are interested, please click this link to complete the short screener survey, and someone from our research team will contact you to schedule the interview at a time that is most convenient for you.

Here is the screener link again: https://redcap.msm.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=PEPNTKPC9YT7HM7F

Thank you for your consideration.
