Last week, I tried a new store-brand drink from Wegmans. It looked like a mystery sample, but it turned out to be their version of a popular product I buy all the time.

I shared my honest feedback, just like I’ve done as a Wegmans “Insider” for more than 15 years. I’ve tested everything from new products to gameday food ideas, and it’s always great to see those items show up on store shelves later.

Gift cards and coupons are a nice bonus, but they aren’t what build real loyalty. What really matters is being asked for your input, speaking honestly, and seeing the brand actually use your feedback.

If you run a business, manage a team, or build a product, who do you ask first when you make a big change?

Many sports pitch decks use the same visuals: a giant athlete cutout, packed stadium lights, and bold typography. It seems right in internal reviews, but when a buyer sees five proposals in a week, they can’t remember which team offered what.

Showing scale highlights opportunity, but showing specific moments highlights value. Replace the generic crowd shot with a detail that tells the real story. Give the buyer a clear one-sentence takeaway they can use to pitch your offer to their colleagues the next day.

Before you start a design project, ask these five questions.

1️⃣ What should change after someone sees this?
2️⃣ Who is it really for, and who else will see it?
3️⃣ Where will it live?
4️⃣ What does it have to sit next to?
5️⃣ How will we know it worked?

A request tells you what to make, but good questions tell you why you’re making it.

Try these questions on your next project and see what changes.

The trailer for You Can See Everything has been living rent-free in my head since late summer.

I still haven’t found a three-hour window to watch it yet. I’m hoping next weekend will finally be the payoff. Still, as a designer and marketer, I keep thinking about what that trailer pulled off.

In brand design and marketing, there’s always pressure to share every feature, benefit, and reason to buy right away. But the order you reveal things really matters.

Design isn’t just about making things look good. It’s about building a story in the right order:

1️⃣ Hook: Give people a reason to care.
2️⃣ Hold: Build tension and interest.
3️⃣ Deliver: Let the details add to the strong base you’ve created.

Whether you’re working on a website, a presentation, or a full brand campaign, don’t give everything away in the headline. Give people a reason to keep watching.

Has a trailer or ad campaign ever grabbed your attention before you even tried the product?

The brief asked to “refresh the deck,” but what it really needed was a better story.

In sports marketing and creative strategy, we’re always under pressure to move quickly. But sometimes, a request is just someone’s first idea for a solution. Polishing slides won’t fix a story problem. If you start designing before asking tough questions, you risk rework, missed deadlines, and losing trust.

Before you sign off on the first round, take a moment to ask what problem you’re really trying to solve. Design doesn’t start the thinking, it shows it.

Impressive design gets noticed. Useful design gets used.

If your sponsorship deck looks great but your sales team keeps rebuilding it, that’s something to pay attention to.

Here’s a simple check for any design system:

Can your team sell with it? Can a sponsor explain it without you? Can your team use it when the deadline is tomorrow?

If the answer is yes, it’s helping. If not, it might need to be more practical, not just more polished.

Save this for your next deck review.

My daughter asked if we were getting pumpkins this year. When I told her I’d probably just grab some at Trader Joe’s or Wegmans, she seemed slightly disappointed.

“Can we go to a pumpkin patch or a farm market instead?”

My first thought was about how much time it would take. What could be a quick five-minute stop on my way home would now turn into an afternoon outing. The holiday season used to be my favorite time of year, but lately it feels more like an endless list of things to do.

The grocery store pumpkins would have been just fine. They were a good price, looked nice, and would have done the job. But my daughter wasn’t looking for a better pumpkin. She wanted the experience of walking around together, picking one out, and making a memory instead of just finishing a task.

She didn’t just want a pumpkin. She wanted us to have a reason to spend time together.

Whether it’s parenting or business, this is a good reminder. When everything is convenient, it’s the experience that makes the trip special.

You signed off on a sponsor deck with stunning layouts and bold gradients. Everyone at the review meeting loved it.

So why did your partner’s marketing manager create their own version just two weeks later?

In sports marketing, it’s easy to mix up impressive design with useful design. Impressive design gets compliments in meetings, but useful design helps sales reps close deals, lets partners find a rate card in seconds, and avoids vendor mistakes.

When deadlines are tight and decisions matter, too much decoration can get in the way. Clear hierarchy, consistent spacing, and organized files keep your brand’s reputation strong long after the launch excitement fades.

Before you approve your next project, ask yourself: Does this design help busy people get their work done, or does it just look good on a slide?

Does your deck look like everyone else’s? Here’s something to try.

Find one visual move that’s unique to you. It could be a certain photo crop, a single color in one spot, or a shape from your stadium or graphics.

Use it on every slide, one-pager, and follow-up email you send.

Then cover your logo and see if people can still recognize it’s you.

There was a time when less than $100 always filled the tank. Now, it just marks where the pump stops.

Over the past few months, seeing the pump stop early has changed how I think about daily spending. Same car, same tank, but the numbers feel different. It makes me reconsider everything, from subscriptions to a night out.

When money gets tight, we all start to question what’s really worth it. For brands and creators, it’s a reminder that while loyalty matters, showing your value right now is what counts most.
