There's a lot of discussion right now about nervous system regulation. In fact, it's one of the trending wellness topics of 2024. When our nervous system is stressed - we seek quick fixes to get out body back into balance, to lower stress, and to help unwind. One of the main things we reach for to cope is ALCOHOL! But did you know that alcohol actually increases the body's stress response, making stress WORSE and the nervous system MORE irritated (hello, )?

You might be asking...What is nervous system regulation?

In the post-pandemic era, many of us are struggling with balancing our stress response, cortisol levels, and triggers from constant stimuli (work, emails, social media, politics, gossip, relatioships, etc. etc. etc.). We're looking for ways to calm the body, reduce the feeling of being "on edge", and allow ourselves to relax more naturally. If you've been feeling that hyper-sensitive / hyper-reactive / over-stimulated feeling... you're not alone.

Here are some of my favorite ways to regulate the nervous system. I am a huge fan of EFT, meditation, taking supplements, and getting sunlight. You can learn more about nutrition, supplements and other lifestyle tools to support your nervous system and reduce the need for alcohol in my new book, How to Eat to Change How You Drink -- available wherever books are sold!

Our biggest dreams are once just a fleeting thought. A seed of an idea. Sometimes its a thought so brief that you hardly notice it. Sometimes these thoughts come into your head and nag at you until you have no choice but to follow it. Its your responsibility to answer those calls and follow the breadcrumbs to make them a reality. This is your contribution to the world. To others. The price we pay for our ticket on planet earth.

Innovation and creating something from nothing seems impossible, until you find people around you that support your idea with as much passion and fire as you. Find those people and keep them close.

The experience of writing a book is so similar to the experience of sobriety. It takes grit. Persistence. It is full of emotional ups and downs. It is hard as hell. It creates massive amounts of resilience. It will challenge you over and over again. But you wake up and keep choosing that thing because you know it is all for a greater purpose. It takes you out of yourself and into service to others.

When I look back at the last 2 years (while writing this book), and then further back at my entire life I can see with clarity how everything was unfolding to get me to this point of my journey. That all of the hard times, all of the ups and downs of life, were all put in my path to lead me here.

I am so, so grateful that I get to share this book with the world on December 26th. I am grateful to every single person around me that helped to make this possible. And I am grateful to you who will read it. I hope and pray that it provides you with even the tiniest seed for your journey that can help you grow into the life that you've always dreamed of living.

If you've experienced anxiety and/or low mood, nutrient deficiencies may be playing a role!Did you know that B vitamins (like B12, Folate, B6), Magnesium, Zinc and even Vitamin C play a role in mood and mental health by supporting the creation of serotonin and dopamine?

Did you know that these nutrients are also depleted with regular alcohol consumption?

During alcohol elimination or reduction, it is key to replenish these nutrients in order to improve mood and ward off anxiety.

Want to learn more about this topic? I dive deep into nutrition and alcohol in my new book, How to Eat to Change How You Drink! When you pre-order now, you'll receive access to my bonus audio training, AND a special rate on my new Dry January program coming soon!

How has your mood and mental health improved with alcohol elimination or reduction? Let me know in the comments below!

One of the ways that disturbs your health is by way of your !Alcohol has 3 main effects on your gut health:

💩 Digestion: Alcohol lowers stomach acid and digestive enzymes that help break down our food and absorb nutrients. It also irritates the stomach and causes ongoing issues with heart burn and reflux.
💩 Gut Microbiome: Alcohol causes imbalances in our that can affect things like mood, energy, skin, immune system health, hormone balance and more.
💩 Intestinal Lining: Alcohol breaks down the lining of the gut and contributes to -- this can affect late-onset food sensitivities, autoimmune issues, inflammation and so much more.

Let's not mention... after a night of drinking, many of us can attest to feeling *not so great* digestively. Can you relate?

I have an entire chapter on alcohol's effect on the gut and how to heal in my new book, 🌟 How to Eat to Change How You Drink 🌟, which hits shelves on December 26th! (T-minus 23 DAYS!). If you haven't yet preordered your copy, head to the link in my bio for details!

You may have heard the phrase... "Our genetics load the gut, but our lifestyle/environment pulls the trigger". This phrase explains the theory of -- or the study of how our environment affects the expression of our genes. While we're often thinking about how our genes contribute to our use history, we're not as often talking about how alcohol affects our genes themselves.

Its quite well understood in the research that alcohol has a negative impact on our genes, and can be a major contributor to health concerns through epigenetic changes. This is because alcohol affects how our body produces DNA and a process known as methylation.

THIS is a HUGE area of opportunity when it comes to , food and healing our bodies. While we may have negatively impacted our health during times of heavy alcohol use, its not too late to provide our body with the necessary foods and nutrients to improve our health outcomes. It especially important to consider in those with an MTHFR gene SNP (a topic for another day :)).

One thing I love to recommend to my clients healing from alcohol use is increasing foods that support methylation, like cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage), beets, seeds (like sunflower and pumpkin), and even turmeric!

When you think about alcohol and genes, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Let me know in the comments below!

Want to heal your body from long-term use? Start by incorporating in some of my favorite foods for healing the liver and balancing blood sugar!

Beets: A superstar veggie for the liver, heart and increasing oxygen flow through the body. I recommend consuming them a few times per week.
Citrus: Helps aid in liver and bile flow and supports waste removal from the body. All types of citrus can help! Consume citrus daily, or as often as possible.
Broccoli: The cruciferous vegetable family (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, etc) has a potent effect on the liver and gut. Consume at least one cup per day!
Protein-rich foods: Help stabilize blood sugar, support the liver, and also provide important amino acids that support the brain! Consume protein at each meal and snack.
Wild-caught fish: Fish contain many nutrients that are difficult to find in the diet, like Omega 3's, Vitamin D, selenium, and others that help with brain and mood. Consume 3-4 times per week.
Berries: My favorite low-sugar fruit helps boost the brain and provides lots of antioxidants that repair damage from alcohol consumption. Consume them daily.
Leafy greens: A great source of magnesium, leafy greens can help replenish this relaxation mineral that lowers stress and supports a healthy mood. Consume daily.

What are your favorite alcohol healing foods??

Did you know the statistics around alcohol elimination are quite glum? Even those who explore rehabilitation, therapy, and 12-step programs have a fairly low success rate of staying alcohol-free beyond a year. You know what's missing? Addressing the PHYSICAL changes that occur as a result of long-term alcohol use.

Here are 3 areas to focus on and evaluate after alcohol cessation:

1. Vitamins and Minerals: Alcohol severely depletes most of our important vitamins and minerals that support energy production, healthy mood, and more. Taking simple supplements and beginning to introduce more nutrient-ruch foods is key!

2. Gut Health: Chronic alcohol disrupts the balance of healthy microbes in our gut, which can cause digestive issues, mood imbalances, and more. Exploring a probiotic can help, in addition to adding more fiber and fermented foods.

3. Hormones: Most people are surprised when I share the impacts of alcohol on hormones of all kinds -- s*x hormones, cortisol (stress hormone), and even blood sugar hormones. Stress relief tools and herbs that help balance stress relief can be a great way to support hormone balance.

The moral of the story is this:
If you've quit and you don't feel any better, or if you're struggling to quit or cut back on alcohol, its time to add nutrition!
