Walk Awhile in My Shoes

Walk Awhile in My Shoes This challenge, begun by Achilles International, is intended to build awareness of and compassion for people with disabilities. What is Achilles?

Achilles started as a track club for athletes with disabilities in 1983 after Dick Traum, the first above-the-knee amputee to run a marathon distance, ran the NYC Marathon and received a standing ovation. The sense of achievement he experienced was immeasurable and he knew that if he could provide this type of opportunity to others who are differently abled, he would be creating a powerful force t

hat would change lives. Often, those who are disabled physically or developmentally challenged have a difficult time making ends meet. To participate in mainstream athletic events, sponsorship is necessary and Achilles provides financial support to those in need and fosters a community of people who come together to run: able-bodied volunteers guide Achilles athletes who need assistance. Running together, we all achieve more! WALK A WHILE IN MY SHOES is a social media campaign and challenge intended to build awareness of and compassion for people with disabilities. An Achilles athlete challenges a minimum of three people to walk or run a while in simulation of the athlete's disability.

Our NYC Chapter Director, Michael Anderson, has taken the challenge! Michael said he considered giving up within a few seconds of attempting to run the bridle path blindfolded, but he thought of the challenges faced by his fellow members and stuck it out. I do not recommend you do the challenge this way. You must mini-leap to land square on heel. It looks easy but 5 days later, I am still feeling the ache.
