Does a single glass of red wine or a slice of aged cheese trigger a massive migraine? You might be dealing with Histamine Intolerance. 🍷🧀

If you have noticed that specific foods reliably trigger a migraine attack, you aren't imagining things. But the root cause might not be the food itself—it might be how your body processes histamine.

Think of your body’s ability to process histamine like a bucket. Every time you consume high-histamine foods (like aged cheeses, red wine, fermented foods, or cured meats), your bucket fills up. Normally, an enzyme in your gut called DAO (Diamine Oxidase) acts as a drain, breaking down the histamine so the bucket never overflows.

If you lack enough DAO enzyme—due to gut dysbiosis, chronic stress, or hormonal imbalances—the histamine drain gets clogged. The bucket overflows into your bloodstream, causing systemic inflammation. In the brain, this sudden histamine overload causes blood vessels to swell and dilate, triggering a debilitating migraine attack.

We don't just tell you to avoid your favorite foods forever. We look for the functional root cause. By healing the gut lining, supporting DAO enzyme production, and balancing your immune response, we can help increase the size of your histamine bucket.

👇 Tired of food triggers ruling your life? Stop guessing and cut through the health overwhelm. Book a Complimentary 15-Minute Clarity Call with our associate, Dr. Pauline Hoang. She will listen to your story and help you map out the perfect holistic game plan for your unique needs.

One of the most common questions we get in our practice is: "Will starting Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) protect my brain as I age?"

The naturopathic and functional medicine answer is nuanced. Estrogen is deeply neuroprotective—it drives cellular energy into the brain and calms neuro-inflammation. But when it comes to HRT and the brain, timing is everything.

🕰️Current clinical research points to a "critical window" of opportunity. Initiating bio-identical HRT during perimenopause, or within the first 10 years of menopause, appears to offer the most profound neurological benefits. During this window, estrogen receptors in the brain are still healthy and highly responsive.

Starting HRT decades after menopause, when the brain's estrogen receptors have already altered their structure, does not show the same protective cognitive benefits and requires a highly individualized risk-to-benefit assessment.

HRT is an incredibly powerful tool, but it must be tailored to your unique biology, cardiovascular health, and timeline.

08/03/2026

When we think about pregnancy-induced high blood pressure (or conditions like preeclampsia), we usually associate it with the end of pregnancy. But in functional medicine, we trace the timeline back to the beginning.

Here is the fascinating biology of how your body builds a life support system:

🌱 The Root System (Weeks 1–13): During your first trimester, the placenta acts like a plant putting down roots. It attaches to the uterine wall and "remodels" your blood vessels (spiral arteries). It naturally widens these vessels to create a low-resistance, high-capacity pathway for blood to flow easily between you and the baby.

🛑 When the Roots are Shallow: If there is high systemic inflammation, nutrient depletion, or oxidative stress during early pregnancy, the placenta might not remodel those vessels deeply or widely enough.

📈 The 3rd Trimester Impact: Fast forward to the third trimester. Your baby is growing rapidly and demands massive blood flow. If those early vessels are too narrow (high resistance), your heart has to pump exponentially harder to push the blood through, leading to elevated blood pressure.

This is why preconception and 1st-trimester care is so vital. We focus on optimizing your antioxidant status, lowering systemic inflammation, and supporting vascular health before the placenta finishes its critical building phase.

Why protein is your best friend for safely expanding your blood volume during pregnancy. 🥚🩸

During pregnancy, your body performs a cardiovascular miracle: it expands your total blood volume by up to 50% to ensure your baby receives adequate oxygen and nutrients. But this massive expansion requires precise nutritional support.

Blood isn't just liquid; it relies on proteins—specifically albumin—to act like a sponge. Albumin helps maintain osmotic pressure, holding fluid inside your blood vessels.

When your protein intake is too low during this rapid expansion, your body struggles to hold that fluid in the circulatory system. The result? Fluid leaks out into the surrounding tissues, leading to heavy, uncomfortable swelling (edema) in your hands, feet, and ankles.

For optimal prenatal health, we generally recommend aiming for 80 to 100 grams of high-quality protein daily (depending on your unique biology).
✓ Start your morning with a protein-heavy breakfast (eggs, Greek yogurt, or a collagen smoothie).
✓ Incorporate bone broth for easily absorbable amino acids.
✓ Prioritize complete proteins like organic chicken, wild-caught fish, and grass-fed beef.

Proper protein intake doesn't just build your baby's tissues; it protects your cardiovascular system.

🌿 Not sure where to start with your prenatal nutrition? Stop guessing and cut through the health overwhelm. Book a Complimentary 15-Minute Clarity Call with our associate, Dr. Pauline Hoang. She will listen to your story and help you map out the perfect holistic game plan for your unique needs.

07/17/2026

When we talk about Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS), it's really a complex picture, impacting millions of women globally. You might often hear about PCOS in relation to insulin resistance or weight gain, and these are certainly common features for many. However, what's crucial to understand is that PCOS isn't a "one-size-fits-all" diagnosis. There's a significant subset of my patients who experience something we call adrenal androgen excess.

So, what exactly does that mean? In this distinct presentation of PCOS, it's not primarily the ovaries that are producing too many androgens (like testosterone). Instead, their adrenal glands become the main source of these excess hormones, particularly DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone). DHEA, on its own, has androgen-like properties, but it can also be readily converted into testosterone, contributing to many of the symptoms you might be experiencing.

A topic that's incredibly important for many of my patients navigating the complexities of PCOS is adrenal health. I'm going to share the exact supplements I recommend as part of a comprehensive naturopathic protocol,  tailored for women who experience adrenal androgen excess PCOS.
