Microsoft says its next generation of AI data centers may use almost no ongoing water — a claim aimed directly at one of AI’s biggest environmental criticisms.

At Microsoft Build 2026, CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the company’s new 315-acre “Fairwater” AI superfactory in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, describing it as a major shift in how massive AI infrastructure could be built.

The key idea is a closed-loop cooling system. Instead of continuously drawing large amounts of local water to cool servers, Microsoft says the system is filled once and reused, reducing annual water use to roughly the level of a single neighborhood restaurant.

Nadella also pointed to a more compact, vertical data center design — stacking infrastructure upward rather than spreading it across huge single-floor buildings. Microsoft says this approach could help reduce land use, ease pressure on local resources, and make AI expansion more acceptable to nearby communities.

But the bigger question remains: as AI demand explodes, can tech companies truly build these giant facilities without straining local water supplies, electricity grids, and public trust?

🌊🤖 **Samsung is taking AI data centers offshore.**

Samsung Heavy Industries is developing **50-megawatt-class floating data centers** designed to place powerful computing infrastructure on rivers or at sea. The approach could help address some of the biggest challenges facing traditional land-based facilities—including limited space, electricity constraints, and the enormous cooling demands of AI workloads.

One of the most interesting features is **seawater cooling**, which could help remove heat from high-performance servers while reducing the need for conventional land-based cooling systems. Samsung is also working with partners to test whether AI server infrastructure can operate reliably in marine environments.

The concept builds on earlier experiments such as **Microsoft’s Project Natick**, which tested an underwater data center in the North Sea. Microsoft reported that its servers experienced a failure rate about **one-eighth that of the land-based control group** during the experiment.

Samsung’s floating facilities are still moving toward commercialization, so this technology has yet to prove itself at large scale. But if it succeeds, the ocean could become more than a source of cooling—it could become a new location for the world’s rapidly expanding AI infrastructure. 🌊⚡🖥️

A Washington farming town of 8,100 people has turned two decades of Microsoft data center tax revenue into a new high school, hospital and aquatic center.

Quincy, once known for potato fields and apple orchards, now hosts enough data center facilities that the sector has become a meaningful employer while fueling the city's broader tax base.

Microsoft and the city also partnered on a $31 million water-reuse utility that the EPA says saves an estimated 138 million gallons of water a year.
