I tried to imagine a day
when I would miss you less.
That day never came.
The way I miss you has changed, though.
That much is true.
Your absence no longer walks into the room
making a noise.
It sits beside me.
It comes with me to the grocery store,
rides beside me in the car,
listens to my songs.
Sometimes,
I can even laugh
while it’s there.
I’ve realized that I don’t need to heal
from the pain you left behind when you went away.
I just need to learn
how to live with the space
you left in my life.

I miss the things
I didn’t know were precious back then.

The hours with no plans.

The words we said
just for the sake of talking.

You in the next room,
and me feeling at peace
simply because I knew you were there.

If I could have you back for just one day,
I don’t think I’d do anything special.

I wouldn’t waste time
trying to make it unforgettable.

I would simply be with you.

Because now I know:

happiness was not knowing
that one day
I would miss all of this.
