This morning, we gathered to commemorate the lives lost on September 11 and honor the extraordinary courage of our first responders who answered the call that day.

Reflecting on the 25th anniversary during our commemoration ceremony, our first responders shared a sentiment felt by many: “It feels like it happened yesterday.”

On September 11, 2001, Jamaica Hospital and Flushing Hospital deployed seven ambulances, two mobile clinics, and numerous support vehicles to Ground Zero. A team of 123 employees, including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, physicians, mental health professionals, and support staff, rushed toward the danger to save lives.

Today, we remember not only those who perished, but also the bravery, resilience, and selflessness displayed in the face of tragedy. May we never forget the heroes, the sacrifices, and the enduring spirit that defined September 11, 2001.

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, a month that addresses the challenges patients, their families, and caregivers experience and provides an opportunity to increase public knowledge and understanding of sickle cell disease and traits.

Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders that affect hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen through the body. It is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States.
