Paralyzed for over 15 years, he thought there was no point in seeking care. After one of his other docs encouraged him to see me, he decided to take the plunge and undergo facial reanimation. 6 months after surgery he is able to smile again and I’m so glad to see it.

This rockstar was ready to get rid of the heaviness around his eyes. With plastic surgery in men, we take special measures to make sure the nature and character of the eyes doesn’t change. We did upper and lower blepharoplasties, removing the heavy bags under his eyes and the excess skin surrounding them.

That’s a wrap on the 15th International Facial Nerve Symposium in Madrid. It was a truly special meeting gathering the international community of experts in facial paralysis and reanimation, all passionate about advancing our small field and bringing better solutions for our patients. Our all star NYU resident Dr. Varelas gave 3 wonderful talks presenting our work. It was wonderful to share ideas and meet with friends old and new, and I even got to enjoy the city with my son .

Looking forward to the next meeting in Sweden 2029!

Maybe the only thing I love more than facial reanimation is pediatric facial reanimation. There is no better feeling than watching a kid who has never smiled (on both sides) do it for the first time!

Emily here was born with right sided facial paralysis. We did a trivector gracilis free flap, taking muscle from her leg and carefully designing it into 3 paddles to recreate as close to an identical match to her left side. We connected to both a nerve brought from the left side (crossface nerve graft) as well as the chewing nerve (masseteric nerve) on her right side to create this beautiful, natural smile.

As happy as her and her mom are, she is bothered by the fullness on the outer edge of her eye so we will go back and try to slightly slim that bulk for a better contour in a small procedure. Kids honesty can always humble you and push you to do better ☺️

We don’t often talk about the base view, it’s not the most exciting, but it tells the story. Deviation, collapse, and asymmetries will be revealed in the base view when others may hide it.

For this patient we restored her breathing, straightening her septum and supporting her nasal valves while bringing balance and refining the appearance.
