Taylor Swift said it herself — 'I've got LASIK. I have incredible vision.' But here's what almost nobody talks about when celebrities make LASIK sound effortless.
LASIK has one of the best PR teams in medicine — and it's entirely unintentional. When a global superstar casually mentions during a podcast that she can now see thousands of faces in a stadium crowd with perfect clarity, millions of people quietly add it to their list of things to consider. And that's genuinely wonderful, because LASIK does change lives.
But at NY LASIK, we've spent over 25 years having the full conversation with patients — not just the exciting part, but the part that actually determines whether surgery is right for you.
Here's what the headlines leave out: according to a 2024 article in Expert Review of Ophthalmology, somewhere between 20% and 30% of LASIK patients experience visual disturbances after surgery — things like halos around lights, starbursts, or glare, particularly at night. For the vast majority, these resolve completely as the eye heals over the following weeks or months. But in rare cases, they can linger longer.
Dry eyes are another common experience post-surgery. Studies suggest around half of patients notice them in the weeks following the procedure. Again, most cases are temporary — but your eyes' baseline health before surgery matters enormously in predicting how you'll recover.
There's also the question of correction accuracy. LASIK can occasionally undercorrect or overcorrect a patient's vision, and in a small number of cases, a return to glasses or contacts becomes necessary. This isn't to scare you — it's to make the point that the single most important factor in a great LASIK outcome isn't the laser. It's the candidacy evaluation that happens before you ever step into a procedure room.
The right surgeon asks hard questions, runs thorough diagnostics, and — when the answer is 'not quite yet' or 'there's a better option for you' — says so. That honesty is what separates a great result from a regrettable one.
What questions do you still have about LASIK that you've never quite gotten a straight answer to? Drop them in the comments — Dr. Bley and the team read every one, and there are no bad questions when it comes to your vision.
