What are you rehearsing in your mind?
Sometimes we mentally rehearse the very outcome we don’t want:
What if the conversation goes badly?
What if I become overwhelmed?
What if I can’t follow through?
Anticipatory anxiety often works this way. Your imagination moves ahead of you, and your mind and body begin responding as though the imagined experience is already happening.
But what if you used that same imaginative ability more intentionally?
You can practice picturing yourself pausing, breathing, setting a boundary, making a supportive choice, or responding with greater calm.
You aren’t rehearsing perfection. You’re helping your mind become familiar with a new response.
My newest article includes a short guided imagination practice that you can read—or listen to as I guide you through it.
