Your horse is an athlete, treat them like one! 💪🏼

Think about human athletes. They train hard, perform, recover, get sore, develop compensation patterns, and rely on therapy to keep their bodies functioning at their best. Equine athletes are no different! Their bodies are constantly adapting to the demands we place on them.

Bodywork and supportive therapies can help maintain mobility, address muscular tension, support recovery, improve body awareness, and help prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems. ❤️‍🩹

The goal should not be to wait until your horse is hurting. The goal is to support their body before they get to that point! You invest in quality feed and supplements, so why not add therapy to their program as well? 🤔

A horse that feels good can perform better, recover better, and stay in the game longer.

Your athlete deserves the same level of care you would expect for yourself. Here at J.E.M., I build a customized combination of modalities for each individual horse based on their specific needs, job, training program, recovery, and how they are feeling that day.

There is no “one size fits all” approach. That is exactly why I offer the variety of therapies that I do. My goal is to create the ultimate recovery and maintenance program for each horse, giving every athlete the individualized care they deserve. ✨

One of the reasons I recommend NutriSana EQ is because it goes beyond just amino acids. It provides the building blocks muscles need to recover after work while also supporting connective tissue, collagen production, gut health, and the immune system. Healthy muscles don’t work alone, they rely on healthy tendons, ligaments, and overall body function to perform at their best.

Whether your horse is a high level performance athlete, in training, recovering from hard work, or simply aging gracefully, proper nutrition plays a huge role in how they feel and recover day after day.

I’ve seen the difference it has made in my own horses, especially with maintaining muscle, improving recovery, and helping keep them feeling their best. I have felt real differences in the horses that I work on too!!!!

If you’re looking to support your horse from the inside out, NutriSana EQ Origin is definitely worth adding to their daily routine.

❤️‍🩹Tendon injuries are one of the most frustrating injuries to rehab because the tendon itself is often NOT the primary problem.

WHY did it become overloaded in the first place?
Unless it was a traumatic injury like getting caught in a fence or slicing the leg, many performance related tendon injuries happen because something else in the body is not functioning correctly.

That’s why proper diagnostics matter SO much. 🩺
“Go get an ultrasound” isn’t just about confirming swelling. It’s about understanding:
• Is it the superficial flexor tendon?
• Deep digital flexor tendon?
• Suspensory?
• Tendon sheath?
• Check ligament?
• Fiber disruption or just strain/inflammation?

Because every structure has a different job and requires a different rehab approach.

For example:
• The superficial flexor tendon is more connected to endurance and postural function
• The deep digital flexor tendon is more connected to power and explosive movement
• The suspensory supports the fetlock differently and is commonly tied to whole body compensation patterns

This means rehab, exercises, loading, timelines, and compensation patterns can ALL change depending on what structure is injured.

A suspensory injury especially is often tied to bigger issues like:
• Weak thoracic sling support
• Poor posture
• Pelvic imbalance
• Hoof balance problems
• Compensatory movement patterns

You can rehab the suspensory all day long, but if the horse has unresolved pelvic imbalance, poor loading mechanics, or weakness elsewhere in the body, the injury is much more likely to return.

Good rehab is NOT just:
❌ Stall rest
❌ Turnout
❌ Waiting for time to pass

Good rehab IS:
✔️ Diagnostics
✔️ Controlled loading
✔️ Movement assessment
✔️ Rebuilding strength correctly
✔️ Addressing the WHOLE horse, not just the injured leg

The goal isn’t just healing tissue.
The goal is creating a horse that can properly handle work again long term.🐴

🐴Horses are constantly changing physically🐴

🐎Their bodies adapt to training, soreness, compensation, injuries, hoof balance, riding style, muscle development, weakness, and stress.

A horse rarely just “randomly” becomes lame one day. Most of the time the body has been compensating long before that point.💪🏼

You’ll usually see little signs like…
• uneven muscle development
• standing differently
• trouble bending one direction
• shortened stride
• soreness that keeps returning
• changes in topline
• behavioral changes
• tightness patterns

The body is always communicating, everything connects together. A restriction in one area changes how the rest of the body moves and compensates. Hooves affect shoulders, shoulders affect the back, the back affects the pelvis, the hind end changes too and so on!

This is why I believe maintenance, movement, proper muscle function, and paying attention to posture matters so much ❤️‍🩹
The goal isn’t just treating what already hurts… it’s catching what the body has been trying to tell us🐴💪🏼

Wellness Wednesday ✨STRETCHING

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people cold stretching horses. 🐴

Muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments need circulation and warmth first before asking them to lengthen properly.
Cold stretching can create micro tears, irritation, guarding, and even make a horse tighter afterward because the body goes into protection mode.

✅ GOOD times to stretch:• After exercise• After bodywork• After warm up walking• After heat therapy• When the muscles feel soft and mobile

🚫 NOT good times to stretch:• Right out of the stall• Before warm up• When the horse is cold backed or guarded• Immediately after an acute injury• If there’s swelling, heat, or pain without knowing why

Stretching should help the body relax and improve mobility… not force range of motion.
Remember every horse is different. Some need dynamic movement first, some need release work before stretching, and some horses should NOT be stretched in certain areas depending on injury or compensation patterns. That’s why understanding anatomy and the horse in front of you matters so much ❤️‍🩹

💪🏼Muscle Monday 🐴
Interscutularis (ear muscle) 👂

⚙️Function
This small muscle helps control ear movement and expression. It connects into the fascia over the poll and top of the neck, so it plays a role in communication, awareness, and even subtle tension patterns through the head and cervical region.

😣When it’s tight…
You might see stiff or less mobile ears, pinned ears without obvious attitude, head shyness, resistance at the poll, or overall tension through the topline. Horses can feel locked in the front end, reactive when bridling or touching the ears.

❤️‍🩹How to stretch
Gently encourage ear mobility by softly massaging around the base of the ears and poll. Lightly move the ear forward and back within a comfortable range, never forcing it.

Small muscle with a big influence when it comes to relaxation and connection 🐴

If you know me, you know I don’t let a year go by without continuing my education and expanding my knowledge.

I think as horse owners we need to be more aware of what we are doing! There are a lot of “injections” being used that can help in the right situation, but not all of them are harmless long term. Some can contribute to cartilage breakdown, weaken soft tissue over time, and lead to compensation patterns that turn into bigger issues like strains or tears. This stands out as a bodyworker to me because I’m the one feeling those changes in the body and sometimes working on horses that are already dealing with the aftermath.

This is absolutely NOT about going against your vet, it’s about being informed and asking questions.
J.E.M. does NOT practice veterinary medicine or diagnose. I work alongside your vet!

Work as a team and understand what’s being used, why it’s being used, and what the long term plan is, including how it can negatively impact your horse

Motion is lotion!!! Movement, maintenance, and consistency go a long way.

Do your part as an owner and stay proactive. Be confident that you make sure you’re choosing what’s best for your horse’s body, not just what’s quick.❤️‍🩹

Strawberry is 23 years young and still rideable ❤️🐴

This takes years of consistency, paying attention, adjusting when her body changed, and putting in the work even when nothing looked “wrong.”👀

We all know more goes into aging than body work like breeding, riding, care, management, and listening to the horse.
But I’ll die on the hill that the longevity I’ve had with my horses Strawberry is primarily because of the work I’ve done consistently with her since 2015… lots of massages and microcurrent, consistent bodywork with intention. I’ve stayed on top of her muscles, her fascia, and her compensation patterns.
I’ve adjusted my approach as she’s aged and her workload changed.

I’ve caught things early, before they turned into injuries. I’ve been able to support her through stiffness, soreness, and the normal wear and tear that comes with age.

That’s why it’s important to have a maintenance schedule just like you do for your cars, homes, and hopefully yourself. Bodies don’t just “hold up” forever, they’re maintained.

Strawberry is living proof that when you stay ahead of it, you can get more years, more comfort, and more rideability out of your horse 🤍

I want to share your story, your testimony of how J.E.M. has helped your horse. If you’d like to be featured on my page, send me a picture and how bodywork has helped your horse! 951-847-0603
