Way to go, Nikki! You’re going to do great things at Norfolk Christian Athletics! 💜

We could not be more excited to welcome Nikki Knight to the NCS Athletics family as our Certified Athletic Trainer!

A proud 757 native, Nikki is a 2004 graduate of Christopher Newport University, where she earned her degree in Exercise Science and competed as a Varsity Track student-athlete. She later earned her Master’s in Athletic Training from VCU in 2012. We’re also incredibly excited to partner with CHKD as part of Nikki’s role, bringing additional training, support, and resources to NCS Athletics and the care we provide for our student-athletes.

Nikki has spent her career caring for student-athletes throughout Hampton Roads, beginning with Portsmouth Public Schools, then Elizabeth City State University from 2021–2023, before returning to Portsmouth and now joining NCS!

Nikki brings so much knowledge, experience, compassion, and heart to NCS Athletics, and we are so blessed to have her with us!

A few fun facts: Nikki loves Goofy, loves to travel, and her birthday is July 11! 🎂😂

Nikki, we are SO glad you’re here! We can’t wait for our student-athletes, coaches, and families to get to know you.

Today, we welcomed Brian Martindale of Kidneys For Kids back to CHKD. Brian travels across the country raising awareness of kidney disease and the life-changing impact of living kidney donation for children and adolescents in need of a transplant.

During his visit, Brian sat down with 12-year-old CHKD patient Sofia De La Lastra and her family to hear their story, along with members of Sofia’s care team from CHKD's Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program. Sofia is living with kidney disease and is currently searching for a living kidney donor. Through it all, she continues to show incredible courage and strength.

We are grateful to Brian for continuing to raise awareness for children like Sofia and to our dedicated team members who care for our patients living with kidney disease. 💙

More than 400 school nurses from across our region joined CHKD today for our first Regional Back-to-School Nurses Inservice at Indian River High School!

CHKD physicians and clinical experts shared practical guidance on common pediatric health concerns, helping equip school nurses with tools and information to care for students as they head back to the classroom.

"When pediatricians and school nurses share information and expertise, we create a stronger support system for children and families," said Dr. Leah Rowland, a CHKD pediatrician at Pediatric Specialists who spoke at the event.

Thank you to Chesapeake Public Schools for hosting, Food Allergy Research & Education for sponsoring the event, and all of the school nurses who attended.

We were honored to welcome Congressman Bobby Scott and members of the Virginia General Assembly to CHKD for a tour and conversation about the health and well-being of children in our community and across Virginia.

During their visit, our guests toured several areas of CHKD’s main hospital, including our Emergency Department, inpatient hematology/oncology unit, rehabilitation unit, and Level IV NICU. There, they learned more about the specialized care our teams provide every day.

Thank you to Congressman Bobby Scott and our state leaders for taking the time to visit CHKD and learn more about our mission to bring Health, Healing, and Hope to All Children. 💙

Back-to-school season is a good time to make sure your child is up to date on routine immunizations.

With measles outbreaks reported in multiple states, staying current on vaccines is one of the best ways to protect children from serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Measles is highly contagious, but it is also preventable, and vaccination remains the best protection.

As families prepare for a new school year, CHKD encourages parents to check their child’s immunization record and talk with their pediatrician about any questions. Your child’s pediatrician can help ensure they are protected and ready for a healthy start to the school year.

Learn more at CHKD.org/Immunizations.

Learn why newborn immunizations are important, which vaccines your baby needs, and how vaccines protect against serious childhood diseases.
