Many people are surprised to learn that pelvic floor therapy isn’t just about leakage and incontinence.

The pelvic floor is connected to your core, hips, back, bowel and bladder function, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and so much more.

A lot of people ask me who I treat so I figured I’d give some examples from this weeks caseload. I

If you can resonate with any of these statements, pelvic floor therapy may be a good option for you!

These issues are not a right of passage as many other healthcare professionals suggest.

Your symptoms are real and need to be treated by a trusted professional who can provide hands on, personalized care for you!

POV: Your pelvic floor loves hydration more than you think! 💧

Many people don’t realize that not drinking enough water can actually contribute to pelvic floor symptoms like:
• Bladder urgency & irritation
• Constipation
• Pelvic pain
• Muscle tightness
• Difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels

When your body is dehydrated, urine becomes more concentrated and irritating to the bladder.

Dehydration can also make stools harder, leading to straining — one of the biggest stressors on the pelvic floor.

Hydration helps your muscles, fascia, bladder, and bowels function more efficiently and comfortably.

Small habit changes can make a BIG difference:

1-Sip water consistently throughout the day
2- Add electrolytes if needed (when engaging in high intensity activity or heavy sweating)
3- Limit excessive caffeine if it worsens symptoms
4- Don’t wait to drink water until you’re extremely thirsty

Your pelvic floor is part of your whole-body wellness and it needs water to function optimally!

How many ounces of water do you drink a day??

Ever wonder why pregnancy and foot pain often go hand-in-hand??

During pregnancy, your body goes through HUGE changes that affect your feet and the way you move.

Here’s why plantar fasciitis becomes so common:

✨ Increased body weight = more pressure through the feet
✨ Hormones like relaxin loosen ligaments and reduce foot stability
✨ Your center of gravity shifts, changing posture and walking mechanics
✨ Muscles in the hips, core, and pelvic floor may not support movement as efficiently
✨ Swelling and changes in footwear can add even more stress

The plantar fascia — the thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot — can become irritated and overloaded, leading to: sharp heel/foot pain, pain and/or aching with prolonged standing/walking, foot fatigue.

It’s not “just a foot problem.” but rather a whole body system problem.

The feet, hips, core, and pelvic floor all work together. Supporting the whole body during pregnancy can make a big difference in pain and function.

If you’re pregnant and struggling with foot pain, know that it’s common — but you don’t have to just “deal with it.”

“Kegels” have become the go-to advice for almost every pelvic floor issue…but here’s the truth:

Kegels are NOT always the answer! (And for many people, they can actually make symptoms worse!)

Why? Because pelvic floor dysfunction isn’t always caused by weakness. Sometimes the muscles are:
• too tight
• overactive
• uncoordinated
• not relaxing properly

In those cases, adding more tightening exercises can increase:
⚡ pelvic pain
⚡ urgency/frequency
⚡ painful in*******se
⚡ constipation
⚡ leaking

Your pelvic floor is meant to BOTH contract and relax in coordination with your body. Strength without relaxation is dysfunction too.

That’s why a personalized assessment matters. The right treatment might include:
✨ breathing strategies
✨ relaxation work
✨ mobility
✨ coordination training
✨ nervous system support
✨ strengthening — when appropriate

Pelvic floor rehab is never one-size-fits-all. You need a practitioner who sees you as a whole, individual person, not a cookie cutter routine.

If you’ve been doing Kegels nonstop and still struggling, your body may be asking for a different approach.

Reach out today to see how Americkan Wellness approach is different from traditional pelvic floor therapy!

Pelvic floor therapy patient goals;

“Go on an airplane without wearing a diaper.”

“Run around outside with my kids without leakage.”

“Be able to pick up my grandchild without farting.”

“Have s*x without having to take pain medication.”

“Travel without lower back pain.”

“Run a marathon without sciatic pain.”

“Give birth without tearing.”

“Be able to get on and off the ground to play with my grandchildren.”

I work with patients a LOT on goal setting because I want to know what their true life goals are.

Goals are not about “tightening your pelvic floor muscles” but rather maximizing your potential to live your life the way you want to live it.

Daily activities and occupations are what give your life purpose and meaning.

If you can’t fulfill your daily routine due to pelvic floor dysfunction, then you’re not living your life to your full potential.

Pelvic floor therpay can help decrease pelvic floor dysfunction and increase independence with favorable occupations and activities!

Did you know that the United States of America has the highest infant and maternal death rates than any other developed country in the world?

The United States of America also spends more money on healthcare than any other country in the world.

So why would a country who spends more money on healthcare than any other country in the world have the worst maternal and infant mortality rates for a developed country?

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. maternal deaths occur postpartum.

Here’s why;

•Limited access to prenatal and postpartum care. Many women in the U.S. do not receive consistent prenatal care early in pregnancy or adequate follow-up after delivery.

•Postpartum complications are underestimated. A large portion of maternal deaths in the U.S. occur after delivery — sometimes weeks or months postpartum.

•The U.S. is the only high-income country that does not federally guarantee paid maternity leave or provider home visits during this vulnerable period.

•High rates of chronic health conditions. A growing number of people enter pregnancy with pre-existing issues such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. These conditions directly increase the risk of severe complications during pregnancy and delivery.

•The US has high rates of preterm birth and low birth weight—often linked to maternal health issues and lack of prenatal care.

•The U.S. lacks guaranteed, comprehensive paid leave and universal health insurance coverage.

•Lack of resources to maternal care. Millions of women of childbearing age live in counties where no maternity care providers or birthing facilities are available.

What countries with lower mortality rates tend to have include;

Universal healthcare
Longer paid parental leave
Strong primary care systems
More home-based postpartum support
Better access to midwives and preventive care
Lower socioeconomic inequality

Research indicates that roughly 84% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable.

Research also shows that the more educated women are throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey the less likely they are to have birth related complications.

Here at Americkan Wellness I am focused on educating and empowering women to make the best decisions for their body and circumstances.

I aim to be a beacon of education for the women that I work with to diminish birth related complications.

Things that you shouldn’t do/ignore pelvic floor addition!!

-Wait for your pain, bulge, leakage, or discomfort to “go away on it’s own”
-do keagles without knowing if you’re doing them properly OR if your body would benefit from them
-hold your p*e for more than 4 hours at a time
-go p*e “just in case” when you don’t have a true sensation of bladder fullness
-place anything with scents, fragrances, or glycerine around or in the va**na
-push through pain and discomfort with s*xual experiences
-wait for your OBGYN or P*P to give you a referral to pelvic floor PT/OT before reaching out yourself

Most women who I speak with on a daily basis truly believe that they have to live with leakage, pain, pressure, weakness in their pelvic floor for the rest of their life, that there is no “cure” or “fixing” their deficits.

This is anything but the truth, pelvic floor therapy can help minimize symptoms and get your body back to doing what it loves to do. Whether it is jumping, running, biking, squatting, bending, reaching, lifting, orgasming (think I made this word up completely) pelvic floor therapists are here to help!

If any of these above symptoms/situations feel personal to you and your body, reach out to a specialized pelvic floor therapist today at 330-614-4253!

Did you know that The American College of Physicians (ACP) has recommended Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PFMT) and Bladder Training as the strongest recommendation for first-line, non-surgical treatments for women with urinary incontinence?

If you're one of the over 50% of women experiencing leaking (whether it's with a cough, a sneeze, or a sudden urge), know that while it's prevalent, it is NOT a normal or required part of aging or motherhood.

This evidence-based recommendation means focusing on comprehensive, whole-person solutions:

~PFMT is more than basic "Kegels." It's a coordinated program to improve the strength, endurance, and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles, integrating deep core and diaphragm function.

~Bladder Training is a behavioral intervention designed to increase time between voiding, often involving nervous system regulation, proper hydration management, and lifestyle modifications.

At Americkan Wellness LLC, led by Ericka Turner, OTR/L, we align with this non-surgical philosophy by providing in-home concierge pelvic health therapy. Our goal is to restore function and confidence without the immediate need for invasive procedures.

Had the BEST ladies night education session at Cheyenne Townsend Photography last night!

All of these ladies joined me to learn more about pelvic floor therapy, what I do, and how I do it.

It was such a wonderful event filled with tips, tricks, and all things pelvic floor therapy.

Thank you for all that came out to attend and for those who attended via zoom. We had a great turn out. Tons of fun, laughter, and of course education.

Thank you Cheyenne Townsend for hosting me. I can’t wait to do another class!! 🩷🪴

For those who didn’t get to attend this one (we had it capped at 10 particiapants due to limited space) I will be hosting three more pelvic floor education and training sessions next month at various yoga and Pilates studios, stay tuned for more details on those in the next few weeks.

I truly love what I do and I love being able to educate women on the much needed benefits of pelvic floor therapy.

Love y’all, have a bless weeekend. 🫶🏻
