A physical examination provides important information, but it can’t show everything happening beneath the surface. Depending on your symptoms and the type of injury, diagnostic imaging may help physicians evaluate bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, discs, and other internal structures. Imaging findings are then considered alongside your symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and changes in function to help your physician better understand the injury and determine appropriate next steps.

After a fall, telling your doctor that you're in pain is important — but describing that pain can provide even more useful information.

Where does it hurt? What does the pain feel like? When do you notice it most? Does it get worse with certain movements? Is it affecting your sleep, mobility, work, or everyday activities? Pain isn't just a number on a scale. The location, type, timing, and impact of your symptoms can all provide important clinical information during an evaluation.
You don't need to know medical terminology. Just be as specific as you can about what you're feeling, where you're feeling it, and what has changed since the fall.
