who i am as a human absolutely translates into how i doula.

so much of the care, connection, and wisdom i bring into the birth room comes beyond trainings and education.

it comes from living, being a mother, being curious, making mistakes, my intuition and years of witnessing people become parents

i value intuition just as much as evidence.
i embrace the humor just as much as the reverence. i hold space for the magic and the mess that embodies birth.

birth is deeply human and so my care

the more births i witness, the more humbled i am by them. i care deeply about meeting you wherever your story unfolds. if you are pregnant or watching rhugt lets chat!! ✨😂☕️

one of the most supportive things you can do in labor is stop waiting for the birthing person to tell you what they need every moment.

labor takes people deeply into their body, and constantly having to answer questions or direct support can feel surprisingly overwhelming.

the best support often comes from simply paying attention, staying connected, and stepping in with care before they even have to ask. 🤍 or just holding space for them to feel witnessed and celebrated.

if you are needing extra hands and support to help you prep for birth, let’s talk.

i have seen this so many times.

a client calls me in tears at telling me they are done. completely done. they’re uncomfortable, emotional, discouraged, exhausted from waiting, and convinced labor is never going to happen.

almost every time, I hang up the phone quietly thinking… “I bet I’ll see you soon.”

not bc there is one magical emotional sign that predicts labor, and not because every birth unfolds this way, but because there is often this very real emotional shift that happens right before things begin to change.

the body is working so hard behind the scenes and sometimes we feel that shift long before we can physically see it.

we see this again in labor too. especially during transition.

that moment where someone says, “I can’t do this anymore. im done. i changed my mind.

people often think those words mean someone is falling apart, but after supporting so many births, ive come to see it differently.

a lot of the time, it is actually a sign that something is opening… something is shifting. the intensity is building, yes, but so is surrender. so is trust. so is the incredible vulnerability of standing at the edge of transformation.

i think we are taught to fear those moments of doubt so much, especially in birth. doubt and fear are not the opposite of strength. they can exist alongside courage and can exist alongside readiness…. ✨

what has been really beautiful and healing for me to witness within this work, is the narrative my kids are naturally building around birth.

they see bodies as bodies. they know birth can be hard, unpredictable, and sometimes take a long time.

they know babies come into the world through bodies. they see that after birth, there is healing and care.

not because i’ve intentionally sat down and taught them these things, but because this is simply the world they are growing up in.

and after growing up with a very different narrative around birth myself, there is something really beautiful and healing about watching this knowing quietly be passed down to my own kids.

bc honey, I did all these things. but i don’t know if i would change any of it.

you kind of have to go through these if you want to really root into this work and evolve in it.

but… this is what i would gently whisper to a younger version of me or to a newer doula walking into this space with the understanding that you’ll still have to learn it for yourself 🤍

everything on this list took me years to learn!!

i kept collecting certifications and trainings like little trophies, thinking maybe the next one would finally quiet the imposter syndrome.

i would get so excited about the possibility of a birth that I stopped going to family events, birthday parties, gatherings… JUST IN CASE I got the call.

i isolated myself in a small town in southern Minnesota because the big city doulas intimidated me. and somewhere along the way, i convinced myself they were competition ( 🤢 👎 )

i didnt understand the importance of post-birth rituals until I started feeling it… the buildup of emotions, the energy that lingers after holding space for so many labors.

i stayed awake for 24+ hours trying to prove I was devoted. that I was worthy of being hired.

i carried responsibility for outcomes that were never mine to hold… and I carried them for months.

i said yes to everything. drove anywhere and took on clients I knew (even in the interview) maybe weren’t fully aligned, all from a place of scarcity.

and i stayed small in birth rooms. didn’t introduce myself or ask names because I wasn’t sure if I belonged there… or if I was just “the doula in the room.”

this work will stretch you and humble you and change you.

if you’re in it right now, learning these lessons in real time, you’re right where you need to be. ✨ keep going!!!

experienced GOATS what would you add? 👇

stay golden,
doula kat 🧡
